Marvel Studios released the first trailer for the upcoming Werewolf By Night special.

Unveiled during Disney's D23 celebrations, the Werewolf By Night trailer introduces Marvel fans to Jack Russell (Gael García Bernal), who transforms into the titular lycanthropic character. Surprisingly, the special -- at least, based on what's shown in the initial teaser -- is fully embracing a campy, classic black-and-white horror movie aesthetic, right down to the vintage-style movie matinée opening. Additionally, eagle-eyed viewers can catch the very first glimpse of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's debut of the monstrously heroic swamp-dweller Man-Thing.

News of Disney+'s upcoming Werewolf By Night Halloween special broke in Aug. 2021. The special is directed by Michael Giacchino, a longtime composer who has worked on films such as Jurassic World: Dominion, The Batman, Spider-Man: No Way Home and more. Giacchino previously directed a 2018 short titled Monster Challenge and a 2019 episode of Star Trek: Short Treks. "I've been having a blast," Giacchino previously said when asked about working on Werewolf By Night. It's an incredibly challenging process. I love it." He continued, "Every day I've been having fun working on it, and we're in the middle of it, and hopefully very soon we'll share a lot more about it."

The official synopsis for the special reads, "A new Werewolf by Night is prowling the Southwest, but all is not as it seems! A young man, a family curse, and an unholy experiment prove a dangerous combination for a small town in Arizona. All young Jake wants is to protect his people, but who will protect him from the monster within?"

Who is the Werewolf by Night?

Created by Roy Thomas, Jeanie Thomas, Gerry Conway and Mike Ploog, Jack Russell first debuted in 1972's Marvel Spotlight #2. The character went on to star in his own solo series, Werewolf By Night, which ran for 43 issues up until 1977. Werewolf By Night #32, published in 1975, also contains the first appearance of Moon Knight, who was originally hired to kill Russell but instead ends up deciding to help him. Russell went on to star in a number of other series and made a number of additional appearances over the years. In October, the character will reunite with Moon Knight in the Moon Knight Annual #1 from writer Jed MacKay, artist Federico Sabbatini and cover artist Rod Reis.

Werewolf By Night releases on Disney+ on October 7.
