What's Werewolf By Night?

Fans got their first official look at the titular Werewolf, played by Gael Garciá Bernal, at Disney's D23 Expo event. In the black-and-white trailer, monster hunters gather in search of a mysterious relic at Bloodstone Temple. It is disclosed by one of the attendants that a monster walks among them. In flashes of old-school horror cinema, guests get ambushed, body parts are dismembered, a talking genie machine makes a pun and a caged man transforms into a monstrous form. It will be the official MCU debut of both the Werewolf and Man-Thing -- a man transformed into a horrific fear-eating swamp monster.

The entire trailer is just under a minute and a half long, but it teases some suspected connections to the greater MCU. In one flash of a scene, it appears as though agents of the Time Variance Authority appear in their signature uniforms and baton-like weapons. There are theories regarding this possible Loki connection, but nothing has been officially confirmed so far.

Though officially listed as a comedy, the Marvel Studios production is inspired by early horror films. In documentation released by Disney, the guiding forces of the upcoming Halloween special include flicks "of the 1930s and 1940s." The statement classifies the film as something designed to "evoke a sense of dread and the macabre, with plenty of suspense and scares along the way."

The hunters will have plenty on their hands between Man-Thing and the lycanthrope among them. However, it seems that is not the only opposing force. Werewolf By Night's primary antagonist is reportedly called Verrusa. Portrayed by Harriet Sansom Harris, this character will be unique to the film and have a special connection to the Bloodstone family.

Werewolf By Night debuts on Oct. 7 for streaming exclusively on Disney+.
