Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun! is a fun isekai anime series returning for a third season in the Fall 2022 anime season. This is the tale of the gentle protagonist Iruma Suzuki and his adventures down in the Netherworld, the realm of demons. As a student at the Babyls school, Iruma has met plenty of young demons his own age and befriended many of them.

Iruma-kun! fans have met many of these characters for themselves, from Babyls' cool teachers and support staff to the students of the abnormal class, but there is one demon boy who Iruma and the viewers haven't properly yet met. Previous seasons of Iruma-Kun! have been teasing the arrival of another abnormal student -- one who is still only making cameo appearances for now. However, whether he will be Iruma's friend or enemy remains to be seen.

Why the New Boy Might Be Iruma's Enemy or Rival

students concerned, including mystery boy

By Iruma-kun!'s third season, the mystery boy has still not yet spoken aloud or done anything of note, nor has he even appeared by himself in the anime's scenes. Instead, this lavender-haired demon boy has merely been lingering in the corner of a few scenes, teasing his eventual introduction with cameo appearances. He is a humanoid demon boy of average height, with an unremarkable haircut, unreadable eyes and pointed elf-like ears reminiscent of Barbatos Bachiko's own, plus two small wings on his back. If this mystery boy has any special bloodline traits or other powers, he's keeping them well-hidden for now under that plain, average-looking exterior.

This deceptively bland exterior could be the perfect cover for this boy to make his move as Iruma's new worst enemy. After all, Iruma once thought that his gentle, seemingly innocent classmate Kiriwo was a good friend, only for Kiriwo to be outed as a traitor and a villain working for Baal himself. That plot twist helped kick the action into high gear in Iruma-kun! Season 2, most of all the climactic battle for Walter Park, and Kiriwo might be back for more later on. Iruma is a nice kid, but he needs rivals and enemies to keep this shonen-style action story moving, and if Kiriwo won't make a move, perhaps this lavender-haired mystery boy will. He could even challenge Iruma as a friendly or unfriendly rival in the upcoming "Harvest Festival" story arc -- a challenging event that's a perfect time for rivals or enemies to strike.

The Mystery Boy Might Be Iruma's Ally Instead

abnormal class candle meeting

The mystery boy has been content to linger in the shadows for now, to the point where he was barely even visible when the abnormal class's students gathered to talk in the candlelight about their tough My Hero Academia-style training. Fans have to look closely to realize that the mystery boy is in the scene, and at first, that makes him look sinister and menacing. True, this boy might be the new Kiriwo to give Iruma a proper rival, but he could just as easily be a new friend. There's an argument to be made for each possibility.

If the new boy won't become Iruma's new enemy or unfriendly rival, then perhaps the enigmatic demon student will be a more neutral or polite rival, or even an ally. Iruma is prey in the eyes of demons like Kiriwo and Baal, but by now, he and his abnormal classmates are minor celebrities, like the students of UA's class 1-A, and maybe the mystery boy would rather have Iruma as a powerful ally than an enemy. If so, this practical mystery boy knows that he'd gain much more than he'd lose by buddying up with the superstar Iruma Suzuki. This may help ensure the mystery boy's survival in the tough battles ahead.

In that case, the mystery boy is not a villain hiding under a deceptively false exterior. Rather, the mystery boy may simply be a kuudere -- a cool, aloof person who genuinely likes other people without actually showing it. Other kuudere boys in recent anime include the icy Shoto Todoroki, Megumi Fushiguro and Giyu Tomioka, all of whom have good hearts under their calm, detached exteriors. If so, Iruma and this boy may simply need time to become allies and friends, and when the time is right, the ice around this mystery boy's heart will melt, revealing the warmth underneath. Just in time, too -- Iruma can use all the allies he can get considering the formidable challenges that lie ahead.
