In the world of anime, the rules of magic are limited to the creator's imagination. That being said, imagination can take things in weird and unexpected directions. Sure, viewers expect to see witches and wizards who command fire, water, earth, and air, but some characters have strange and unusual abilities with their magic.

Some characters can have power over the most random things, like pieces of paper to playing cards. They can also use their powers in unusual ways or do strange, bizarre things to activate their magic. That said, just because they use magic in an unusual way doesn't mean they should be underestimated.

9 Black Clover: Charmy Has Cotton, Sheep, & Wolves At Her Disposal

Charmy Using Her Cotton Magic - Black Clover

In the world of Black Clover, virtually every character has some different form of magic. One of the most unusual is Charmy, who is capable of Cotton Magic, which allows her to manipulate cotton in various ways, which even segues into Creation Magic.

She's capable of creating sheep that do a variety of tasks for her, like cooking or serving as a cushion for her. And in an homage to the old idiom, she can create a hungry wolf in sheep's clothing.

8 Sailor Moon: Princess Kakyuu Is The Sailor Scout Of Poker

Starlight Royal Flush

While most of the Sailor Scouts in Sailor Moon have some de facto element, usually referencing the Japanese names of the planets or Roman mythology, Princess Kakyuu, who transforms into Sailor Kakyuu in the manga, proved to be a complicated case, since she comes from a fictional world. Her two main attacks are "Starlights Royal Straight Flush" and "Kinmoku Fusion Tempest."

In the former, she attacks an opponent with playing cards. While the term "royal straight flush" is a reference to poker, the cards she uses resembles the ones that Seiya sent to Usagi to warn her about Galaxia, suggesting they have some unspoken significance to the people of Kinmoku.

7 Read Or Die: Yomiko Readman & The Paper Sisters Can Control Paper

Read Or Die Yomiko Readman Paper Powers

In the Read or Die franchise, characters like Yomiko Readman and the Paper Sisters, Michelle Cheung, Maggie Mui, and Anita King, have the power to manipulate paper. Granted, it's actually a very versatile power, as a skilled Paper Master can render paper deathly sharp.

That said, a notable drawback to being a Paper Master is an unhealthy obsession with reading, to the point where people with this power will put reading ahead of work or even eating. They also have problems dealing with money, since they tend to spend it all on books.

6 Banana No Nana: Nana Has Power Over Bananas

Banana Nana

In the world of Banana no Nana, where everyone has some sort of power, the heroine, Nana, has power over bananas. It comes with a slight catch: not only must she eat a banana each day to maintain her powers, peel included, but she must also eat an additional one for each time she uses her powers.

Drawbacks like this are common with powers in this series. Another character with the power over water is made to soak in water for 20 hours a day.

5 Da Capo: Junichi Can Generate Sweets From His Own Body Fat

Juinchi in Da Capo.

In Da Capo, Junichi, who has some witch ancestry, has a few powers. One that he seems the fondest of is his ability to generate sweets from the palm of his hands. Because the spell draws on calories within his own body, he finds that actually makes losing weight quite easy for him.

In addition to this, he also has the power to see people's dreams. While it sounds like a good idea on paper, there are a few drawbacks: he finds it boring, it makes him sleepy, and he doesn't have too much control over it.

4 Slayers: Lina Inverse Has A Pigeon-Summoning Spell

Lina Inverse from the Slayers anime.

In Slayers, Lina Inverse is a genuinely powerful sorceress, one with an affinity for heat and light, but she does have some unusual spells under her belt, like a spell that summons pigeons. Granted, the spell is more useful than it sounds. She was once able to use the pigeons to open up a hole in another dimension. The pigeons also come in handy when dealing with a small, pigeon-sized enemy.

3 Fairy Tail: There Is Such A Thing As Egg Magic

In Fairy Tail, Kawazu and Motherglare are capable of Egg Magic. This allows the user to conjure eggs, usually from their mouths or other parts of their bodies. The eggs have a variety of uses, from being able to be transformed into other objects to being eaten like normal eggs. They can even be used to hatch certain creatures.

Spells can allow for the limitless production of eggs, but, while they are powerful enough to injure opponents, they can be easily destroyed with fire. Certain egg-related spells include "Egg Buster," "Heavy Egg Rain," and "Egg Wall."

2 The Law Of Ueki: Ai Mori Can Make Someone Obsessed With Glasses

Ai More from Law Of Ueki

In The Law Of Ueki, Ai Mori initially thinks a classmate of hers is an alien because of her mysterious ability to turn trash into trees and control them. It turns out this power was given to him by their teacher.

Eventually, Mori herself gets the power to make people obsessed with glasses. This is actually quite convenient for her, as she already sports a pair of glasses to help her read. It can get so powerful she can coerce an opponent into doing anything she wants by threatening to destroy her glasses. In some cases, the victim is so overwhelmed they can only say the word "glasses" over and over again.

1 Dragon Ball: Majin Buu Really Liked Turning People Into Food

Majin Buu Eating Sweets

Out of context, Buu's Transfiguration Beam in the Dragon Ball franchise seems like a standard spell. However, in practice, it was mostly used as a "Chocolate Beam," which transformed a victim into chocolate. In fact, he had quite a few food-related variations of the spell, like "Candy Beam," "Cookie Beam," and "Hungry Beam," in which he turned his victims into candy and other sweets. He also had the "Chocolate Kamehameha," which also had the similar effect of turning a target into chocolate.

Even in its basic form, the Transfiguration Beam had food-related properties, as seen when he turned Chi-Chi into an egg. Aside from food, he could also turn people into dolls.
