After debuting in the first storyline in Ultimate X-Men as members of Magneto's Brotherhood of Mutants, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver soon joined the superhero team known as the Ultimates. They were part of the secretive "black ops" part of the team, who would do superheroic work in the shadows while the main team got all of the glory. During this time on the Ultimates, a number of characters noted that the twin heroes were disturbingly close to each other. That subtext was later made into canon when it was discovered that the twins had been like that prior to Scarlet Witch losing her life from an attack on the Ultimates by Ultron.

We mention that simply to point out that however weird the relationship has gotten between Wanda and Pietro Maximoff in the Marvel Universe, it cannot possibly compare to how weird things got in the Ultimate Universe. That doesn't mean, though, that the regular Marvel Universe did not see a number of strange situations for this brother and sister duo. You practically need a scorecard to keep track of how many times they have bounced around from heroes to villains. They have gone through even more origins in that same time period! They spent years being practically joined at the hip and yet have spent even longer estranged from each other for various reasons. Their interactions have literally changed the world on more than one occasion! So here are some of the weirdest aspects of their relationship within the main Marvel Universe.

20 BECAME VILLAINS OUT OF A SENSE OF DUTY

Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch made their debut in X-Men #4 (by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Paul Reinman), as members of the evil equivalent of the X-Men, Magneto's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. The weird thing is that right away, it was clear that the twins really were not all that evil. As it turned out, Magneto had rescued them from a group of angry villagers who wanted to stone Wanda for being a witch.

Thus, despite not actually wanting to be villains, they felt obligated to serve Magneto since he saved their lives. It is somewhat understandable, but still weird that they were willing to be evil for so long due to a sense of duty.

19 SURPRISING SOURCE OF ETHICS BETWEEN THE TWINS

As noted, the twins only served as part of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants because they felt that they owed it to Magneto for saving their lives. Therefore, there were many times where they differed with the more actively evil Magneto on things. However, the interesting thing is which of the twins ended up actively opposing Magneto the most.

Wanda always seems a bit more virtuous, but during their time in the Brotherhood, she was far too timid to actually do anything, so it always fell to Quicksilver to make the moral decisions, like unplugging an atomic bomb that Magneto had left behind to destroy an entire island nation.

18 REACH OUT AND TOUCH SOMEONE

Quicksilver runs through Captain America

Interestingly, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver did not actually actively choose to finally leave Magneto. During a battle with the X-Men, Iceman completely froze Quicksilver. Magneto and his other henchmen couldn't wait for him as they made their escape, so they left the twins behind.

They took that as a sign that their duty to Magneto had finally ended. They traveled a bit in Europe before finding out that the Avengers were looking for new members, so they actually wrote a letter to ask the Avengers to add them as members. Even weirder than writing a letter to ask to be on a superhero team is the fact that it worked! "Yeah, you only know as villains, but could we join your team?"

17 A RETURN TO VILLAINY!

One of the most overlooked periods in the history of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver is when they actually returned to villainy for a brief period in the late 1960s! After they had served as members of the Avengers for over 30 issues, Magneto tried to recruit the twins to come work with him again.

They initially declined, but in a battle with the other Avengers, Scarlet Witch was accidentally injured and this caused Quicksilver to briefly blame humanity for her injury, so he fell for Magneto's "mutant unity" propaganda and the pair left the Avengers. They split from Magneto soon enough, but Wanda temporarily lost her hex powers, so they did not come back to the Avengers until she got her powers back.

16 THE TWINS FINALLY SPLIT UP!

One of the problems with the return of the twins is that in the 30 issues that they were gone, the Avengers membership had grown and so there really was no room for both heroes on the team when Cap, Thor and Iron Man all rejoined the team. So, after being a package deal for nearly a decade, Roy Thomas split Wanda and Pietro up by having the Scarlet Witch captured by Sentinels.

Quicksilver grew angry at the other Avengers for letting it happen, so he tried to find her on his own. The Avengers and Quicksilver each independently track her to a base in Australia, but Quicksilver is injured without the others knowing. So when they rescue Wanda, they unknowingly leave him behind.

15 QUICKSILVER IS SUCH A JERK

In one of the most out of nowhere plot twists in Marvel Comics history, the injured Quicksilver was somehow rescued by Crystal of the Inhumans, the former girlfriend of the Fantastic Four's Human Torch.

However, when he contacted his sister to let her know he was okay and that he was going to stay with the Inhumans, he shocked Wanda by forbidding her from dating her synthezoid teammate, the Vision! For someone who experienced firsthand the bigotry of humans against mutantkind, it was very disappointing to see him treat the Vision in a similar fashion. Particularly since Quicksilver had been friendly with Vision for nearly three years at this point in time! Suddenly he thought differently about the Vision when his sister was involved!

14 NOT EVEN WEDDINGS COULD SMOOTH THINGS OVER

Quicksilver's romance with Crystal sped along rapidly and they were soon married. However, even on such a happy occasion, Quicksilver's prejudices played a major role, as he continued to berate his sister for her decision to date a synthezoid.

At least Scarlet Witch was there for his wedding, as Pietro did not even manage to attend the wedding of Vision and Wanda. Granted, it was a spur-of-the-moment ceremony that they shared with a fellow Avenger, Mantis, marrying a plant- like alien who looked like another Avenger (Swordsman) who had recently passed away. But still, for a pair of siblings who were as close as these two were, it is weird that Scarlet Witch got married without her brother there.

13 "OUR DAD IS THE WHIZZER?"

Whizzer

What is fascinating about "Cap's Kooky Quartet," when the Avengers were just made up of Captain America, Hawkeye, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, is that besides Captain America, we knew very little about the other heroes. We did not even learn Hawkeye's real name until he had been on the Avengers for almost 50 issues!

Similarly, the origins of Wanda and Pietro were extremely murky until Roy Thomas revealed in Giant-Size Avengers #1 that they were the children of two Golden Age heroes -- Miss America and the super-fast Whizzer! Their real names were Madeline and Bob Frank. Therefore, for a while there the twins believed that their names were Wanda and Pietro Frank!

12 MOONDRAGON CURES QUICKSILVER'S BIGOTRY

Jim Shooter must have grown tired of the whole "Quicksilver acts like a jerk to his sister," since he made a point of taking time out of his epic "Korvac Saga" storyline to have Moondragon use her telepathy to actually fix Quicksilver's anti-sythezoid prejudices!

Luckily, this came right before Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch discovered another man claiming to be their father! Django Maximoff was a Transian man who believed that Wanda and Pietro were his own children, Ana, and Mateo, who he had lost early in their lives. Django eventually learned that they were not children, but in doing so, Wanda and Pietro also learned that Bob and Madeline Frank were also not their actual parents!

11 "WAIT, MAGNETO IS OUR DAD?"

In one of the coolest pieces of shared continuity between titles, Marvel revealed Wanda and Pietro's true parentage in a very sneaky way. In one issue of Avengers, they showed a flashback to the twins' mother, Magda, along with a mysterious father who was covered in shadows. However, at the same time that the Avengers issue came out, an issue of X-Men showed Magneto looking at a picture of his wife, Magda, who had passed away in childbirth.

So fans knew the truth for years before Magneto finally revealed the news to the twins in Vision and Scarlet Witch #4, where Quicksilver's daughter, Luna, was born.

10 QUICKSILVER GOES SUPER EVIL

In a follow-up Vision and Scarlet Witch maxi-series, Crystal was unfaithful to Quicksilver during a visit to Earth and Quicksilver did not take it well! He turned against humanity and even decided that he hated the Avengers for "leaving him" back in Australia. He framed the Avengers for treason and had the United States government arrest the heroes.

Later, he decided to reform the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and even captured Scarlet Witch and planned to experiment on her to help in his quest to create more mutants. He believed that she had also "betrayed" the mutant race by marrying the Vision. Eventually, it turned out that Maximus, the evil brother of Inhumans king Black Bolt, had temporarily turned Quicksilver evil.

9 SCARLET WITCH FORMS ANOTHER NEW BROTHERHOOD OF EVIL MUTANTS

After Quicksilver returned to being a hero, Scarlet Witch suddenly "broke bad" herself. The governments of the world took the Vision apart as they felt he was a possible threat to world security (as he had briefly taken over the world's defense systems while under the influence of an alien computer). When he was "fixed," he no longer had any emotions.

At the same time, Wanda's children with the Vision turned out to be creations of her powers that she, in effect, willed into existence! With her husband and children gone, the Scarlet Witch turned against humanity and re-formed the Brotherhood with Magneto and Quicksilver. Pietro, though, was secretly working with the Avengers. It all turned out to be the villainous Immortus controlling Scarlet Witch.

8 QUICKSILVER MISSED OUT ON THE WHOLE DISSEMBLED DEAL

Scarlet Witch M-Day

The only way that the Avengers could figure to help Wanda through the loss of her children and her turn to evil was to erase the memories of her children from her mind. That worked for a while, but eventually, the memories returned and she did not handle it well. She blamed the Avengers and began to use her reality-altering powers to tear the Avengers apart.

The crazy thing is that Quicksilver missed out on the whole event! His sister was ruining lives and led to the Avengers actually breaking up for a while and he was on vacation in Greenland during the whole thing! Talk about falling down on the job there, buddy!

7 QUICKSILVER'S SCHEME REMAKES THE WORLD

At the end of the "Avengers Disassembled" storyline, Magneto showed up to take custody of his mentally unstable daughter. Once the Avengers re-formed, they had a meeting with the X-Men to determine what to do with Scarlet Witch. She was just sort of sitting out there with the ability to alter reality!

Some of the heroes debated whether they should just end her life to eliminate her as a threat. Quicksilver overheard these threats and ran to his sister and had her use her powers to alter reality so that mutants would be the dominant race on Earth. This became known as the "House of M," as Magneto was the top sovereign in the world.

6 FAMILY ISSUES AFFECT THE WHOLE WORLD

Part of Scarlet Witch's alteration to the world was to give each hero their "fondest wish" in this new, altered universe, so that no one would question the changes. However, Wolverine's wish was to remember everything about his past, but that meant that he knew that the world had changed.

He slowly recruited a group of heroes to take Scarlet Witch and Magneto down. During the final battle, Magneto discovered that his son had forced his daughter to create this world. He began to attack Quicksilver. A distraught Scarlet Witch was so upset that she decided that the real problem with the world was mutants. So she said, "No more mutants" and almost all the millions of mutants in the world lost their X-Gene.

5 THE MISSING WANDA

Scarlet Witch Powerful

Soon after "Avengers Disassembled," Scarlet Witch's "fake" children each popped up as teenagers. They became superheroes named Wiccan and Speed and joined a new team of Young Avengers. They eventually decided that they would try to find their mother. They teamed up with Magneto on their search. Quicksilver felt that his dad was trying to corrupt Pietro's "nephews," so he attacked his father by throwing wooden spikes at him at super speed. One of the spikes inadvertently hit Wanda!

It turned out that she was a robot that Doctor Doom had created to hide the real Wanda from the world as he tried to take advantage of her powers, but still, Quicksilver didn't know that! Dude almost ended his own sister's life through pure recklessness!

4 WAIT, MAGNETO IS NOT THEIR DAD

It turned out that Wanda had been manipulated to turn evil in "Avengers Disassembled," so now that she was back to normal, she re-joined the Avengers. She even helped bring back the mutant race following a battle between the X-Men and the Avengers. In the wake of that conflict, a new half X-Men/half Avengers team was formed with Scarlet Witch as a member.

During a battle with the Red Skull, who had stolen Professor X's telepathic powers, Scarlet Witch and a group of other heroes were turned evil through a magical spell. She attacked her brother and father and used a spell to make her family feel pain. She was shocked to learn that only Quicksilver was affected! Magneto was not their father!

3 SO THEY AREN'T EVEN MUTANTS

Eventually, the magical spell was reversed and almost all of the "inverted" heroes were returned to being good. However, the now back-to-normal Scarlet Witch had to deal with the fact that she and Quicksilver were not the children of Magneto. They were further shocked to find out that they weren't even mutants at all!

It seems as though they actually were the children of Django and Marya Maximoff and that they were taken as infants by the High Evolutionary, a mysterious super-geneticist, who manipulated their DNA to turn them into super-powered beings. When so much of your life is wrapped around your identity as a mutant, it was quite the shock for the twins.

2 THEIR MOM

However, this being comic books, the reveal that Django and Marya Maximoff were their parents lasted about a year before it turned out that while they were Maximoffs, they were not Django and Marya's children. Instead, their mother was Natalya Maximoff.

The really interesting aspect of Natalya being their mother is that they learned that Natalya actually was a witch who had used the name Scarlet Witch herself in her youth! Inadvertently, Wanda had adopted a name that had been passed down in their family for generations! Natalya had passed away many years earlier but her ghost revealed to Wanda that her demise had been caused by Pietro and Wanda's real father, whose identity remains a mystery to this day!

1 A CIVIL WAR TEARS THE TWINS APART

Soon after finding out about Natalya, Wanda came to a new understanding about her relationship with Pietro. It went down during the Civil War II crossover event. An Inhuman named Ulysses appeared to be able to predict crimes before they occurred. Captain Marvel and Iron Man were on opposite sides of a debate over whether "future crime" should be punished.

Quicksilver showed up at Wanda's home to tell her that they had to join Iron Man's side. Wanda, though, explained that she agreed with Captain Marvel. Moreover, she was sick of Pietro assuming she was a moron who needed him to decide things for her. She told him she never wanted to see him again. Don't worry, they made up a few months later.
