DC Comics continues to expend the Before Watchmen line with the announcement of “Before Watchmen: Dollar Bill,” a one-shot debuting in late January featuring a story by Len Wein with art by Steve Rude.
In an interview with MTV Geek, Wein, who edited Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ original “Watchmen” in the ’80s and is currently writing “Before Watchmen: Ozymandias,” explained his plans to fill readers in on the history of one of the less-developed members of the Minutemen. Indeed, Dollar Bill is an unusual hero, even in the Watchmen universe, a college athlete who became the costumed spokesman for a bank while harboring dreams of Hollywood stardom.
“Part of what makes him succeed initially, is that criminals aren’t that brave to begin with,” Wein said of the character whose most important role in “Watchmen” was his somewhat comical death — being shot during a robbery after his cape got caught in the bank’s revolving door. “They’ve seen Dollar Bill in the movies kicking ass, and so for those first couple of minutes, they’re frozen.”
Len Wein and Steve Rude’s “Before Watchmen: Dollar Bill” one-shot is slated for a January 29 release.
