Fans of Netflix's record-breaking hit show, Wednesday, may soon hear confirmation about when the mystery horror-comedy series gets renewed.

A report from Deadline suggests that a renewal for Wednesday is now a mere formality as talks are expected to go smoothly, though a Season 2 announcement likely won't come until early 2023. In the meantime, the show's producers have been scouting scribes they'd like to join their writer's room while determining potential filming locations. The report also pointed out that, despite Netflix being its home, Wednesday was supplied by Amazon Studios after the Jeff Bezos-owned company secured an $8.5 million to purchase MGM. Despite MGM's restructuring into Amazon Studios under leader Jen Salke, the transition is not expected to prevent Wednesday's second season from going ahead.

Wednesday is Netflix's Most-Watched Show

Wednesday has been a boon for Netflix since its Nov. 23 premiere. Starring Jenna Ortega as the show's titular character, Wednesday Addams, the series has already topped the one billion viewing hours mark, making it the third show to ever achieve that feat for the popular streaming service. It's now the second-most watched U.S. show on the service behind Stranger Things Season 4, which racked up over 1.88 billion viewing hours. The show also prompted Netflix executives to call for an Addams Family Universe on the back of Wednesday's virtually overnight success.

Ortega's performance in her lead role can be pointed to as one of the major reasons for the success of Wednesday. Fans have been raving about the actor's showing with various moments, including her viral dance scene in Episode 4, proving memorable. Though Ortega courted controversy for shooting the scene while exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms, she has largely been celebrated for her convincing portrayal of Wednesday Addams throughout the show, as well as for being a Latina in a leading role, something she has spoken about with pride many times.
