The reviews for Wednesday are in and while many critics found Netflix's adaptation wanting, they all agree on Jenny Ortega's compelling performance.

Netflix's adaptation of The Addams Family, which places the spotlight on the titular macabre teenager, has earned generally favorable reviews even though some believe the series doesn't quite capture the magic of the source material. Writing for Polygon, Petrana Radulovic commended the show's emphasis on the weird and whacky aspects of the family and franchise but lamented that placing Wednesday within an environment of similalrly eerie characters detracts something from her personality. Variety's Caroline Framke echoed these sentiments, noting that they found the show more enjoyable when it was distanced from its source material. "If this were just a series about a disaffected psychic teen exploring her peculiar new school, I’d probably like it a lot better," Framke wrote.

Despite these criticisms, nearly every review has praised Ortega's as the titular Wednesday Addams. "Ortega injects complex pathos beneath the stoicism and dry line delivery," writes Meagan Navarro for Bloody Disgusting. "Wednesday may be matter-of-fact and straight-faced in demeanor, but her eyes convey her emotional truth." Many critics describe the young actor as perfectly cast in the role, with IGN's Amelia Emberwing likening Ortega's performance to Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man and Patrick Stewart's Professor X.

Wednesday Is Creepy... And She's Kooky!

As suggested by the title, Wednesday follows the titular character as she's enrolled into Nevermore Academy, a high school for outcasts much like her. While coming to terms with her fledgling physic abilities and dealing with her embarrasing family, the sinister young woman also embarks on a quest to catch a viscious serial killer who has been plaguing her town. Netflix's series was co-created by acclaimed filmmaker Tim Burton who also directs the pilot episode.

The critics aren't the only ones with heaps of praise for Ortega's performance. Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday Addams in the 1991 film The Addams Family and it's 1993 sequel Addams Family Values, as openly praised the casting. "Jenna is incredible," Ricci said. "It's so true tonally to the heart and soul of [the original], but it's then it's [sic] incredibly modern and it's great."

Wednesday arrives on Netflix on Nov. 23.
