Wednesday fans are realizing that Ms. Thornhill actor Christina Ricci starred as the spooky schoolgirl in the 1990s Addams Family films, making some original viewers feel old.

The connection between Ricci and the franchise struck some viewers recently, who shared their surprise on social media. One Twitter user wrote, "i just found out that the redhead teacher in wednesday is literally played by christina ricci," and another lamented "it hurts me that y'all don't know christina ricci is wednesday." Another said that people only just coming to the realization "makes me feel old because i was mad hype to see her in this series."

Passing the Baton of Wednesday

In addition to acting in Netflix's Wednesday, Ricci also gave Jenna Ortega, who plays the show's titular character, her official seal of approval. "Jenna is incredible," she gushed, adding, "it's such a great modern take on Wednesday. It's so true tonally to the heart and soul of [the original], but then it's incredibly modern and it's great." Wednesday co-creator Miles Millar had previously emphasized that he ultimately wanted Wednesday to feel like a modern take on The Addams Family, noting that it was important to both him and director Tim Burton that it stand apart from the '60s TV show and the films.

For Ortega, the idea of starring alongside the last definitive Wednesday took some getting used to. "I felt like I was genuinely having a panic attack when I was told [Ricci was joining the Wednesday cast]," she recalled, adding that "the first time we did a scene together and she had to see me done up [as Wednesday Addams] the way she was done up 30 years ago, it was nerve-racking."

Audiences might get to see more scenes between Wednesday and Ms. Thornhill in the future, as Millar and co-showrunner Alfred Gough noted that they already have the storyline of Wednesday mapped out for multiple seasons. "You always lay out at least three or four seasons’ worth of potential storylines for the characters," noted Millar, explaining that he and Gough "certainly have a pretty clear runway of what we want to do in future seasons." There is no word just yet on whether Wednesday will be renewed for a second season.

Season 1 of Wednesday is available to stream on Netflix.
