Ortega recently confirmed in an interview that she tested positive for COVID-19 when shooting a dance scene for Episode 4, "Woe What a Night." Though she felt symptoms that day, Ortega went on to do the scene, receiving medicine between takes as she awaited test results. MGM, the production company for Wednesday, subsequently addressed Ortega's comments, saying she followed strict protocols and was removed from the set after the test results proved positive.

Despite the controversy surrounding Ortega's decision to keep filming despite exhibiting COVID symptoms, the actor, who plays the show's titular character, Wednesday Addams, seemed more worried about the quality of the dance scene, which she said wasn't her best because of her condition. The scene in question references dance choreography from classic TV shows, movies and music videos.

Wednesday Is a Hit -- But It's Had Some Controversies

The fallout from the COVID diagnosis news hurts what's otherwise been a well-received run for Ortega as Wednesday Addams in the show based on the character from The Addams Family. Ortega has been praised for her portrayal of the teenage psychic, with the actor also expressing the pride she's felt playing up the character's Latina heritage. According to Ortega, it felt special to have Latina representation in a lead or any role, saying she didn't see many people from her background on TV growing up.

The COVID controversy isn't the only negative that Wednesday has faced since its Nov. 23 debut. The series' director, Tim Burton, has faced backlash for his portrayal of Black characters on the show as bullies and antagonists. Nigerian actor Joy Sunday plays Nevermore Academy mean girl Bianca Barclay on the show, while Iman Marson is cast as Lucas Wilson, the son of a corrupt mayor who owns Pilgrim Land. Alongside Scream 6 star Ortega, Wednesday features Catherine Zeta-Jones (Morticia Addams), Luis Guzmán (Gomez Addams), Gwendoline Christie (Larissa Weems), Jamie McShane (Donovan Galpin) and Riki Lindhome (Dr. Valerie Kinbott)
