Photos from the set of Netflix's Wednesday reveal how the series brought Thing to life. Shared by Netflix on Twitter, the behind-the-scenes photos offer a look at how actor Victor Dorobantu was able to bring the disembodied hand onto the small screen and how he was able to move around on set. One of the photos shows Dorobantu standing next to series star Jenna Ortega in a blue-screen suit, save for his stitched-up hand, while another shows the actor on a rolling cart with a blue-screen sleeve.
Created by Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar, Wednesday is a live-action supernatural mystery series directed by Burton that follows the eponymous Wednesday through her years as a student at Nevermore Academy. Consisting of eight episodes, with the first four directed by Tim Burton, Wednesday will see the titular Addams as she attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, stop a monstrous killing spree terrorizing the local town of Jericho and solve a 25-year-old mystery.
The Addams Family Creeps Onto Netflix
Along with Ortega, the cast includes Isaac Ordonez as Wednesday's brother Pugsley, George Burcea as the family's butler Lurch, Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester, Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams and Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams. Gwendolyn Christie also stars as Nevermore Academy's headmaster. The main cast of Wednesday was revealed in August 2021 and further consists of Wednesday's fellow students at Nevermore Academy and the local townspeople of Jericho. Both Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán will appear in a guest star capacity.
"We then got the call that visionary director and lifelong Addams Family fan Tim Burton wanted to make his television directorial debut with this series," said Netflix's director of original series Teddy Biaselli when Wednesday was announced. "Tim has had a history of telling empowering stories about social outsiders like Edward Scissorhands, Lydia Deitz, and Batman. And now he brings his unique vision to Wednesday and her spooky classmates at Nevermore Academy."
Originally announced in October 2020, Wednesday serves as a spinoff to The Addams Family, which was first created by American cartoonist Charles Addams in 1938 as a single-panel comic. It has since grown exponentially into a franchise featured on the big and small screens, both in live-action and animation. Wednesday premiered on Netflix in November to generally positive reviews, with most fans and critics praising Ortega's performance as the titular Addams. While a second season has not been confirmed, showrunners Gough and Millar have teased potential storylines should they receive the green light from Netflix.
"The series is really about a girl who sees the world in black and white, and learning there are shades of gray," Gough said. "I think like any relationship or any friendship, it can get complicated by other factors. It's never going to be smooth sailing. And it's really her learning to navigate the ups and downs of friendship."
The first season of Wednesday is currently available to stream on Netflix.
