Although both "The Amazing Spider-Man" director Marc Webb and Sony Pictures wanted the director to return for a sequel, Webb's return was far from certain due to his contract with Fox, which stated the director had to return to the studio for a second film following "(500) Days of Summer."
It seems everything's been worked out with Fox for Webb to return for a second run at the web-slinger, though details are sparse. According to The Hollywood Reporter, both Webb and star Andrew Garfield are confirmed to return for a second film, which is set to release May 2, 2014. Emma Stone, who portrayed Gwen Stacy in the film, is currently in talks to reprise the role in the sequel. "Star Trek" writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci were tapped to pen the script before the first film even released, but THR reports another name now associated with the screenplay: ex-"Fringe" showrunner Jeff Pinkner.
"We could not be more confident in the direction we are taking this new 'Spider-Man' storyline, and we are tremendously excited to be ramping up production again with Marc at the helm and Andrew continuing on as Peter Parker," Columbia president Doug Belgrad told THR. "We can't wait to share what we have in store for Peter and Spider-Man with audiences worldwide."
