WARNING: The following contains spoilers for W.E.B. of Spider-Man #2 by Kevin Shinick, Alberto Alburquerque, Rachelle Rosenberg and Travis Lanham, on sale now.

When Peter Parker received his invitation to join the Worldwide Engineering Brigade from Tony Stark, he felt that this was a chance for him to outshine his Spidey side. Peter's hopes began to diminish when holograms of Spidey's greatest enemies interrupted the inaugural meeting. Sensing that Spider-Man could be more beneficial to his new team, Peter opted for a costume change. WEB was able to stop most of the holograms, but the Green Goblin manifestation proved to be more difficult.

As the Goblin's hologram escaped, the team split up and Spidey handed out comm links so they could all stay in contact. As Spidey began to communicate with the team, Squirrel Girl and Onome were immediately confused about how Peter ended up with Spidey's communicator. Peter had forgotten to mask his voice as Spider-Man so he now had to communicate with the team as Peter Parker while fighting as Spider-Man. This became even more problematic when the real Green Goblin was revealed to be behind the holograms.

Spider-Man Makes a Mistake chasing Green Goblin

Throughout their battle, Spider-Man attempted to inform the team of his ideas. He first stated that holograms couldn't talk, right before the Green Goblin hologram started speaking. Later while battling the real Goblin, Spidey told the team that the Goblin was going to take the fight to the sky. The Goblin immediately changed directions and headed to the subway tunnels, making Spidey look like he did not know what he was talking about.

As the battle progressed, Peter urged his team to close all exits to the tunnel to send the Goblin back to WEB headquarters. When they needed an alternate power source, Peter suggested they access the city grid. With the help of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Spidey was able to stop the Green Goblin before he got away with any valuable information.

After the battle, Peter reemerged from the tunnels in his civilian clothes and was surrounded by his team. They talked about how thankful they were for the guidance they received and Pete assumed they were talking about Spider-Man. They quickly exclaimed that they were talking about Peter himself, and talked up his feats during the battle. They were impressed with his leadership regarding the city grid as well as directing the team of Spidey and the Goblin's current predicament. Squirrel Girl was also quick to point out Spidey's mistakes in the battle.

Spider-Man with WEB members

Peter Parker is playing a dangerous game with his new team. While Iron Man oversees WEB's operation, none of the actual members know of Spidey's secret identity. Communicating with his team as both Spidey and Peter is therefore extremely risky. The members of WEB are some of the greatest young minds on Earth and could presumably pick up on Spidey and Pete sharing a voice. Now that Peter feels that he is a valuable asset to the team, he will have to work on distancing Spidey from the brigade.

It should be noted that while there are other superheroes within the Worldwide Engineering Brigade, none maintain a secret identity. During the battle with the Green Goblin, both Squirrel Girl and Moon Girl used their powers to help. If the team were to learn that Peter was actually Spider-Man, it could sprout distrust between himself and everyone else. This could also prove to be detrimental to Peter's relationship with Iron Man's apprentice Harley Keener. Harley is not a superhero and maintains a similar role to Peter within the organization. If Peter were revealed as a superhero, it would leave Harley and Onome as the only members without powers, changing the dynamic of the group.

For the time being, Peter Parker has maintained the mirage that he and Spidey are two different people. He has also successfully gained the trust of his new team through his intellect rather than his abilities. This could prove to be something great for Peter, as long as he can keep his superhero and citizen personas separated.
