The X-Men's roster contains heroes who can do some tremendous things with their powers. Calling them the most powerful superhero team on Earth isn't too far-fetched, as there are members of the team who can cause extinction-level events with just a thought. This brute power, combined the amount of time the team has spent training and mastering their powers, makes them one of the most devastating groups on the planet.

Despite their might as a group, not every member of the X-Men can be a potential world-ender. There are several X-Men, including some of the most important members, who make significant contributions to the team, even though they rank on the weaker end of the spectrum.

10 Sage Is A Living Computer

Sage X-Men Alan Davis

Sage has worked with Charles Xavier for a long time, but she wasn't always a member of the X-Men. For years, she Xavier's mole in the Hellfire Club. Working with Sebastian Shaw as Tessa, she reported back everything the Inner Circle did. Sage's mutant powers made her into a living computer, able to remember just about anything and run computations in her head.

Sage also has some telepathic ability, but she's not on the same level of the X-Men's mental heavy hitters. Sage is the perfect support mutant, able to analyze situations and quickly come up with solutions. This has made her crucial to several iterations of the X-Men and X-Force teams.

9 Nightcrawler's Not The Strongest, But He Has Heart And Experience

Nightcrawler bamfing with his sword

Nightcrawler is an X-Men icon but when it comes right down to it, he's not the most powerful member of the team. His teleportation powers definitely play into fighting style, but they are rather limited. Nightcrawler's teleportation range is limited, he risks becoming tired if he teleports too often, and he has a limit on how many people he can move with his powers.

Nightcrawler's strong, but not superhumanly so. His increased agility is a boon but more than anything, Nightcrawler serves as the perfect distraction. He has no problem risking his life for his teammates and has been with the X-Men for a long time. Nightcrawler flits around the battlefield, his hit-and-run style opening avenues of attack for other members of the team.

8 Cyclops Is An Amazing Leader

Cyclops fires an extremely wide optic blast.

Cyclops's optic blasts can be rather powerful when he needs them to be, but they're also a fairly limited weapon. His beams' line of sight has to be widened manually, usually by removing his visor, and are concussive rather than melting. These factors reduce Cyclops' blast to a battering ram that won't do much against super durable foes. However, what makes Cyclops truly weak is his body.

Cyclops is just a normal person when it comes to strength, speed, and durability. Granted, he's in remarkable shape, but he can be hurt like anyone else. Cyclops is extremely vulnerable considering the type of fights the X-Men get into. However, he makes up for this weakness thanks to his talent as a field commander and tactician.

7 Gambit's Powers Are Unable To Reach Their Potential But He's A Crafty Fighter

Gambit bo staff

Gambit's kinetic energy charging powers give him a great long range weapon, but he's basically just a guy with a grenade launcher and heightened agility. The X-Men have much more powerful members in their ranks who also excel at long range attacks. The irony is that Gambit should be one of the most powerful mutants on Earth, but he's unable to access his Omega level molecular control skills.

What keeps Gambit on the team is his experience and the different skills he brings to the table. Gambit worked on his own as a thief for years, making him perfect for solo missions and infiltrations — bringing skills the more legit members of the team don't have.

6 Wolverine Is A Faster Tank Than Her Father

Laura Kinney earned the right to call herself Wolverine, and proved her value as a member of the X-Men. However, looking at the rest of the team, she's definitely one of the weaker members of the group. Laura's not superhumanly strong, has no ranged attacks, and can't fly.

Much like her father, however, Laura brings a lot to the table. She's just as much of a tank, especially since she was given adamantium bones by the Five upon one of her resurrections. Additionally, Laura is extremely fast and nearly as good at black ops maneuvers as her father.

5 Jubilee's Experience Makes Up For A Lack Of Power

Jubilee unleashes her fireworks in Marvel Comics - X-Men

For a long time, Jubilee was basically a mascot for the X-Men, which is what kept her around. Her powers were good for blinding enemies, and she was tenacious, but that was it. Jubilee's powers grew with practice, but she lost them on M-Day. This led to her becoming a vampire, a time when she was most useful to the team.

Jubilee later lost her vampiric abilities and went back to having her original powers, which was definitely a downgrade, but she's made the best of it. Jubilee has been an X-Man a long time and knows what she's doing, her experience making her one of the team's smartest fighters.

4 Cypher Is The Voice Of Krakoa

Doug Ramsey with Krakoa and Warlock

Cypher has had a long strange road with the X-Men. His power to understand any language didn't exactly make him a great field operative as a New Mutant, and he eventually got killed. Following a similar path to many "once dead" X-Men, he was resurrected, bonded with his techno-organic friend Warlock, and became Douglock for a while before the two separated.

Cypher's language powers would eventually extend to computer programming, but he was still the kind of guy who was often left at headquarters. On Krakoa, he's become one of the most important mutants, as he's the only one who can communicate with the island. Cypher even created the programming language the mutants utilize to make use of Krakoa's biotech.

3 Beast's Brains Are Much Greater Than His Brawn

Beast studies in the X-Men

Beast is one of the smartest X-Men, which is the only reason he's still on the team. Back when the team was founded, Beast was its strongest member but all of that changed when actually heavy hitters like Colossus, Thunderbird, and Rogue joined the team. Beast was the team's most agile member back then too, but then Nightcrawler and Gambit showed up and made him look slow.

Beast basically does nothing better than anyone else — unless it relates to science. He's okay in a fight, but his durability isn't much better than a regular person's. Beast's intelligence keeps him on the team, but his recent raft of mistakes may call that status into question.

2 Kate Pryde Is Experienced, Smart, And A Defensive Monster

Marauders Kitty Kate Pryde and Lockheed

Kate Pryde's powers could make her an excellent assassin, but she doesn't kill. That cuts the efficiency of her phasing powers drastically; she's not going to phase organs or bones out of her opponents. However, that doesn't mean Kate's helpless on the battlefield. She was trained as a ninja by Wolverine and has been with the team for a long time.

Kate is also one of the team's best defensive weapons. She can phase anyone she touches through attacks and can float quicker than she can walk while she's intangible. Kate is an expert with her powers and that makes a huge difference.

1 Wolverine Is The Best Hand To Hand Fighter The Team Has

Wolverine by Adam Kubert in Marvel Comics storyline.

Wolverine is the best there is at what he does, but he's also pretty limited. Wolverine is just a guy with foot-long claws who can take a lot of damage on a team with heroes who are basically gods. He's strong, but his strength is overshadowed by that of his teammates. Wolverine is quick, but there are plenty out there who are faster than him.

Wolverine is a great tank but what really makes him useful is the plethora of skills he brings to the team. He's easily the best combatant X-Men have. Wolverine's years in black ops, combined with his super senses, make him the best infiltrator and scout. This more than makes up for his lack of offensive oomph.
