A Pokémon's stats don't always line up with their appearance. A certain creature may look like a Stone Wall — literally, in some cases — but its stats could tell a completely different story. Take into account a Pokémon's type effectiveness and it can make a bulky-looking creature suddenly become very fragile.

It goes without saying that it's important to look at a Pokémon's stats instead of taking its look at face value and assuming what its strengths are. A player might think they're getting a damage sponge when in reality they're getting a wet blanket, or they could be fearing a large foe without knowing that they have an even bigger frailty.

10 Golurk Was Created To Protect People And Pokémon, But It's Not Great Defensively

Golurk ready to attack in the Pokemon anime

Looking at Golurk, you'd expect it to have defensive stats that are at least in the triple digits, but both its Defense and Special Defense sit at just 80. Its Ground/Ghost dual-typing doesn't do it any favors either, making it weak to Ghost, Water, Grass, Ice, and Dark. The Automaton Pokémon resembles a suit of armor, and having been created by an ancient civilization to protect people and Pokémon, one would expect it to have much better defensive stats.

9 Snorlax's Defense Stat Leaves It Open To Physical Attacks

Snorlax readying an attack in Pokémon.

While the Sleeping Pokémon's Special Defense is up there at 115, its physical Defense is just 65. Considering Snorlax is such a rotund fellow, weighing in at just over 1000 lbs., this may come as a surprise to some. Being a Normal-type means it's only weak to Fighting, but it has only one immunity, Ghost, and is not resistant to any other type, leaving it vulnerable to Physical attacks from all other types.

8 Avalugg's Typing Negates Its Physical Defense Stat

Avalugg from Pokemon

Avalugg looks defensive because it is. It weighs 1113.3 lbs. and has 184 for base Defense. But it's also an Ice-type, and being a defensive Ice-type is never good.

With a Special of Defense of just 46, it's not going to stand a chance in the face of a Special Attack from a Fire-type. The Iceberg Pokémon is also weak to Fighting, Rock, and Steel, has no type immunities, and is only resistant to Ice.

7 Camerupt's Stats Don't Match Its Appearance

Its hefty appearance makes it look as though Camerupt should have considerable bulk, but that's not the case at all. The Eruption Pokémon's base HP and Defense are both at 70, while its Special Defense is 75.

Mega Camerupt gets a much-needed boost to its defensive stats, adding 30 points to each, but in its regular form it's a lot more fragile than it looks. A Water-type using a move like Hydro Pump could easily oneshot Camerupt.

6 Conkeldurr's Concrete Pillars Are Not Used For Defense

Pokemon Trip's Conkeldurr ready for battle

One might think the concrete pillars Conkeldurr holds are for defensive purposes, but this is not the case. In fact, when it goes all out, it throws the pillars away and uses its fists to pummel enemies. Still, as a fully-evolved Pokémon, and a bulky-looking one at that, the Muscular Pokémon's defensive stats leave a lot to be desired, with 95 for Defense and 65 for Special Defense. Being a Fighting-type, Conkeldurr is weak to Flying, Psychic, and Fairy, and it has no immunities and only three resistances.

5 Rhydon Is More Fragile Than It Looks

Anime Pokemon Blaine's Rhydon Horn

With that thick-looking hide and stocky build, it's easy to imagine the 6-foot-tall Rhydon as being defensively solid. But while its base Defense is high, the Drill Pokémon only has a measly 45 for Special Defense.

Rhydon's typing doesn't do anything to shore up its defenses either; its Rock/Ground combo makes it weak to Fighting, Ground, Steel, Water, Ice, and Grass, with Water and Grass moves doing 4 times the normal amount of damage.

4 Mamoswine's Typing Makes It Vulnerable

Ash, Serena and Pikachu riding Mamoswine in the Pokemon anime

The 8-foot-tall Mamoswine is as big as Tyrantrum, Mega Tyranitar, and Mega Metagross, but the Twin Tusk Pokémon is not the most formidable when it comes to defense. A base physical Defense of 80 and Special Defense of 60 make Mamoswine rather frail, especially when its typing is considered.

This Ice/Ground Pokémon is immune to Electric but only resistant to Poison, and has five weaknesses: Fire, Water, Grass, Fighting, and Steel.

3 Stonjourner Is A Stone Wall In Appearance Only

Stonjourner Cropped

The Big Rock Pokémon has 135 for base Defense but the lowest Special Defense of any Pokémon in the Pokédex: just 20. Add to this the fact that it has five type weaknesses and no immunities and it's not the stone wall it appears to be. As long as a trainer hits it with Special Attacks, a battle with Stonjourner isn't going to last very long at all.

2 Copperajah Doesn't Look Like It Should Have Such Low Defense Stats

Pokemon-Anime-Copperajah-2

Weighing in at 1433 lbs. and boasting an imposing appearance overall, Copperajah looks like a defensive beast. Its stats say otherwise, however, with Defense and Special Defense of just 69. The Copperderm Pokémon does boast a number of resistances and is immune to Poison, but if it's up against a Fighting-, Ground-, or Fire-type, it's extremely vulnerable. Not a word you would associate with Copperajah based purely on the way it looks.

1 Wailord Is One Of The Biggest Pokémon Around But Has Poor Defense Stats

Wailord in the water from the Pokemon series

Given that it's basically a blue whale, one would think Wailord should be all about defense. However, the Float Whale Pokémon's defensive stats tell a different story, with just 45 for base Defense and Special Defense. It's also weak to Grass and Electric and has no immunities.

Over 47 feet tall, Wailord is bigger than an Alolan Exeggutor and the second biggest Pokémon next to Eternatus, and yet it's somehow vulnerable defensively.
