WARNING: The following contains spoilers for We Are Who We Are Season 1, Episode 8, which aired on HBO Monday, November 2.

Call Me By Your Name's director Luca Guadagnino's HBO miniseries We Are Who We Are follows American teens Fraser (Jack Dylan Grazer) and Caitlin (Jordan Kristine Seamón) as they grow up on an American military base in Italy, leading up to the 2016 presidential election. As Season 1 wrapped, fans began to wonder if a Season 2 could be on the way. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but here's everything we know so far about a potential We Are Who We Are Season 2.

We Are Who We Are Season 2 Plot

The We Are Who We Are Season 1 finale gets back to the basics by focusing on Fraser and Caitlin's friendship. Previous episodes of the show tackled some big issues, including the two teens' moms engaging in an affair, Caitlin struggling with gender identity and the base being rocked by an IED explosion abroad. However, with those plotlines wrapped up, the final episode focuses on Caitlin's last day at the base.

The pair commemorates Caitlin's last day by getting off-base and traveling to a concert. The rest of the episode is a study of Caitlin and Fraser's deep and complex friendship, with the story ending after they share a kiss. The finale feels fairly complete since We Are Who We Are is supposed to be a miniseries; however, if a Season 2 happens, fans can assume the show will continue to examine the teens' relationship and their lives at the base.

We Are Who We Are Season 2 News

The state of We Are Who We Are is currently in flux. The show was previously marketed as a miniseries, meaning a renewal would typically be out of the question; however, as Guadagnino told Indiewire, he is onboard for it. During the coronavirus lockdown earlier this year, Guadagnino and his We Are Who We Are co-creators Sean Conway, Paolo Giordano and Francesca Manieri have created the Bible for a potential Season 2.

Me and my beautiful writers, we already wrote a Bible for the second season, but we have to see. We did it because we were locked down [during the pandemic], and we didn’t want to waste our time. In lockdown, making Zoom calls, we thought about the characters, and we came up with something [for Season 2]. We’ll see. I’m very curious to know how this is received. You can see that this is a very dear project to me. I feel it as something very close to me, and I’m very happy that I’ve done it. So if HBO and Sky would be game for making the great cast return to their great characters, I will be there.

While Guadagnino and crew have been hard at work, a renewal has yet to be confirmed by HBO.

We Are Who We Are Season 2 Release Date

Should We Are Who We Are get renewed for a second season, it'll likely be a while until fans get to see it. Even though the show's creators have begun fleshing out Season 2, HBO still needs to officially renew it. Furthermore, with the coronavirus pandemic delaying productions of shows and films, those delays could trickle down to We Are Who We Are Season 2 as well, if it's approved.

If We Are Who We Are returns for a second season, fans can likely expect series regulars from the first season to reprise their roles. Grazer and Seamón would likely return in their respective roles as Fraser and Caitlin since their relationship was the heart of the show. Chloë Sevigny and Alice Braga could also return as Fraser's mothers, along with Kid Cudi and Faith Alabi as Caitlin's parents.

Guadagnino, who directed all eight episodes of Season 1, has started writing for Season 2, so he most likely would return as well if a new season is approved. Furthermore, co-creators Conway, Giordano and Manieri would also likely return since they have been working alongside Guadagnino on the Season 2 Bible; however, with there currently being silence about whether a follow up season will happen, these remain assumptions.

This article will be updated as more information becomes available.
