Joining the upcoming Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s end-of-the-world comedy This Is The End wasn’t a difficult decision for Craig Robinson because it simply required him to hang out with some of his closest Hollywood friends.
"That's exactly what it's like, hanging out with your friends and one of them says, 'Hey, we've got this camera, let's rock this,'" Robinson, best known for his role on NBC’s The Office told Spinoff Online at WonderCon Anaheim. "We just happened to have a great budget to do it. It was a lot of hanging out and just messing around and getting the best we could for the takes."
The movie follows Rogen, Robinson, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Jay Baruchel and more actors playing themselves as the apocalypse descends. However, Robinson said these portrayals might not be as spot-on as some might think.
"This is a caricature," he said. "Of course, there is some honesty infused in there so the lines between reality and falsehood are blurred. It's up to you to guess what's what." He added, "I think we all -- well, some of us came out all right. I think I came out all right. We'll see."
While This Is The End is a comedy, it's also going to be pretty violent and bloody. Robinson said he's seen a version of the movie but not the final cut, and that it's going to "mix genres."
"It's a comedy, it's a stoner thing, it's all this stuff going on. It's action, it's supernatural," he said. "Obviously on the page it's one thing, but once we got to go on and heating up and sparring comically it became something nice. I'm really proud and happy of it."
This Is The End is Rogen and Goldberg's directorial debut, but Robinson said they didn't act like amateurs. "They know what they want. They're like a married couple. They check for each other, they're funny as hell and they know about story,” he said. They were doing this since they were, I think, before 13 years old.” Robinson added that he would work with them again, "without a doubt. Whatever they call me to do."
Now that The Office has wrapped, Robinson is in the process of returning to television in a new comedy pilot. He teased its premise to Spinoff.
"It's called Mr. Robinson, and it's about me about me as a teacher. A music teacher. I become a music teacher not so easily, but it happens and then, yeah," he said, adding that music is "a part of everything I do." As for whether he'd want other members of The Office to become involved in Mr. Robinson at some point, Robinson said, "Hopefully, yeah. Hopefully some will come in and some will maybe direct and all that. We've just got to get it off the ground first."
What about Rogen or Goldberg directing an episode? "Well, let's not push it," he joked.
This Is The End opens June 12.
