Being a sidekick to one of the greatest superheroes in all of the DC universes is an honor and a privilege - but is it also the worst. When looking at the pros and cons of being Robin and being partners with Batman, there are entries for both categories.

You get the best training in the world, you usually live in a mansion, and sometimes, Batman will adopt you. However, there are plenty of negatives about becoming Robin that transcend different universes and different versions.

10 The Costume Is A Miss Most Of The Time

As world-famous and iconic as the Robin suit is, for decades it was literally just a colorful and revealing leotard. It's hard to believe that any of the Robins actually enjoyed fighting crime late at night and their legs are out with no protection whatsoever - be it from a low-level criminal's weapon or just the cold.

At least, the least Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown, and Damian Wayne each had more updated suits, complete with pants.

9 Often Targeted By Supervillains

Batman Stephanie Brown Dead

While only a few Robins have been killed, just about all of them have been abducted, kidnapped, and held prisoner by supervillains and members of Batman's rogues' gallery.

Different Robins have been captured and tortured by villains to get information on Batman, like Tim Drake by the Joker in the DCAU or Stephanie Brown by Black Mask in the pre-Flashpoint comics. It's basically a given that Robin will be targeted by the bad guys to get closer to Batman, so why become the Boy Wonder?

8 Dating Is Difficult

Batgirl Three Jokers Jason Todd Regret

In their respective times as Robin, Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, and Tim Drake all dealt with the hardship of maintaining a dating life or even getting into healthy relationships while grappling around Gotham city as the Boy Wonder.

Dick Grayson ended up dating a woman whose brother turned him (temporarily) into a vampire and Jason Todd's first serious love interest was involved with drugs and gangs. Worst of all, each of them has, at one point, been written as a love interest for Barbara Gordon.

7 Having A Double Life Is Tough For Teens

TIM DRAKE - Becoming Robin

Yes, dating while working with Batman is tough but what about the rest of your life? There have been plenty of comics where being Robin got in the way of schoolwork, social lives, and even spending time with family.

Jason Todd's life as Robin affected his performance in school and he was even taken away from Bruce Wayne. After Tim Drake's mother was killed and his father became a paraplegic, his duties as Robin caused a rift between father and son.

6 Kidnapped By All-Star Batman

Dick Grayson Batman All-Star Batman & Robin

In Frank Miller and Jim Lee's All-Star Batman & Robin, The Boy Wonder comic series from 2001-2002, Miller took another swipe at Dick Grayson (after turning him evil in The Dark Knight Strikes Again) and decided to have this version of Batman abduct young Grayson from the police almost immediately after his parents are murdered.

Not to be outdone, Batman told the orphan that he was drafted into a war and then tossed him into the Batcave to live off of rats for the night.

5 Dealing With The New Batman

Turning Point Tim Drake Locked Out of the Batcave

Bruce Wayne had been broken by Bane and a new Batman was needed while he recovered. Enter Jean-Paul Valley whose tenure as Batman kicked off with bringing down Bane and then attacking Tim Drake for the unforgivable crime of being Robin and entering the Batcave.

At this point in the comics, known as "Knightquest: The Crusade", Jean-Paul was dealing with a lot of mental turmoil and he felt that Batman should have no distractions, which ultimately kicked off Robin's own solo series, Robin Vol. 2.

4 Getting Turned Into The Joker

Tim Drake smiling as Joker Jr. in Batman Beyond

In the DCAU movie Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, fans of Batman: The Animated Series fans finally learned what had happened to Tim Drake, the show's second Robin. It turns out that, sometime after the show ended, Tim had been abducted by The Joker and Harley Quinn and had been tortured into becoming Joker Junior or, "J.J."

Tim ultimately broke free of Joker's influence and killed him, but not before Tim was implanted with a microchip that would genetically turn him into the Joker.

3 Killed By Your Own Clone

Damian Wayne has had a pretty rough life, even before he became Robin. Raised by assassins and put in situations that not only got him paralyzed but also killed him. After Damian teamed up with Dick Grayson's Batman (since Bruce had been displaced in the past) his mother decided to create a clone of her son that would follow her orders.

Enter the Heretic, an enormous killing machine that gestated in the body of a whale and was the one to ultimately kill Damian Wayne.

2 Murdered By The Joker

Death In The Family Joker Beats Jason Todd

By far the darkest thing to ever happen to any Robin, Jason Todd's death at the hand of the Joker is an enormous event in the Batman comics and its ramifications are still felt throughout DC comics.

The details of his death have changed over the years but it always ends with Robin being kidnapped, tortured, and then killed by the Clown Prince of Crime. Jason Todd was ultimately resurrected, but his death is still a dark, stark reminder of the downsides to being Robin.

1 Becoming A Child Soldier

Jason Todd's memorial plaque in the Batcave

There have been several iterations of Batman that have been written as believing that he is fighting a war against crime and that the members of the Bat-Family are his soldiers. This is particularly present in Frank Miller's versions of Batman but allusions are made throughout the comics, especially on the plaque adorning Jason's Robin memorial: "In Memory of Jason Todd, ROBIN, A Good Soldier."

Referring to a dead teenager as a soldier is a pretty messed up thing when you really think about it.
