Watchmen's Regina King took to Twitter to celebrate the series' 26 Emmy nominations.

"Every single writer, director, cast, and crew member dug deep and gave everything because we believed in Dave Gibbons & Alan Moore's story that was reimagined by Damon Lindelof. Thank you Television Academy for recognizing one of the most timely & important projects of our careers," she wrote.

Based on the DC Comics series of the same name by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, Watchmen serves as a sequel to its comic book counterpart. The series focuses on the conflict between the Tulsa Police Department, whose officers now all wear masks, and the Seventh Kavalry, a white supremacist group. Characters from the comics that make an appearance include Doctor Manhattan (Abdul-Mateen II), Adrian Veidt/Ozymandias (Irons), Laurie Blake/Silk Spectre (Smart), Hooded Justice (Gossett Jr.) and Nelson Gardner / Captain Metropolis (Jake McDorman). Members of the Seventh Kavalry also wear masks inspired by the one Rorschach wore in the comics.

While Watchmen was classified in the Limited Series categories, there is still a possibility for a second season. Showrunner David Lindelof has expressed some interest in an encore, but only if he is able to craft the right story. King is also open to returning, but only if Lindelof returns as well.

Developed by Damon Lindelof, HBO's Watchmen stars Jeremy Irons, Regina King, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Jean Smart, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Tom Mison, James Wolk, Adelaide Clemens, Andrew Howard, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, Lily Rose Smith and Adelynn Spoon.
