Now that the first season of HBO's Watchmen has come to a close, showrunner Damon Lindelof is opening up about the shocking finale and how the show gave away its cliffhanger ending months ago.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the showrunner discussed the Inception-style ending, where viewers were left wondering if Angela Abar has inherited the powers of Doctor Manhattan. "This is not me saying what happens when her foot hits the water. There are certainly two possible outcomes," Lindelof explained. "But if you watch the entire season again, or if you look at the poster for Watchmen that existed fifteen weeks ago, our intention is clear. That's what I'll say."

At first, many thought the Watchmen poster gave away the reveal that Angela's husband Cal was Doctor Manhattan. Now, Lindelof says fans should look at the poster from a different angle. Although Lindelof still refuses to give the story a definitive ending, he implied Abar takes the powers of her late husband.

Ultimately, there may never be an answer to whether Sister Night becomes Doctor Manhattan. Lindelof has previously promised Watchmen would be a close-ended story told over just nine episodes. That being said, there are swirling rumors Watchmen could return for a second season.

There are plenty of ways the story could go next, such as the incarceration of Adrian Veidt, the whereabouts of Dan Dreiberg, aka Nite Owl, and a proper reveal of who the mysterious Lube Man really is. That being said, it would be just as easy to leave Watchmen with Angela's foot hovering over a swimming pool or pick up with a totally new arc in Season 2.

Developed by Damon Lindelof, HBO's Watchmen stars Jeremy Irons, Regina King, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Jean Smart, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Tom Mison, James Wolk, Adelaide Clemens, Andrew Howard, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, Lily Rose Smith and Adelynn Spoon.
