The will they/won't they between HBO and Damon Lindelof regarding a potential second season of Watchmen seems to have come to a definitive close.

While HBO Programming Chief Casey Bloys left the ball in Lindelof's court as far as doing a second season, Lindelof said to USA Today that he already told the story he wanted to tell within Season 1's nine episodes. He did, however, give HBO his blessing to pursue Season 2 without him, though Bloys conceded, "It would be hard to imagine doing it without Damon involved in some way."

At New York Comic Con in October, shortly before Watchmen premiered, Lindelof explained how the show would follow in the footsteps of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' source material by providing viewers with a complete, self-contained story. "There was a beginning, middle and end planned out," he said. We had to do the same thing. We plotted these nine episodes with every mystery and question being resolved. We didn’t want this season to end with a [cliffhanger]. Our job was to deliver nine episodes that delivered a complete story."

However, despite doubling down on this stance in December, Lindelof appeared to have a slight change of heart, saying, "I actually do agree with HBO that this should be a continuing series. Maybe it’ll continue in a year or two, maybe they’ll continue it in four years or whatever, but I want to see more Watchmen."

It's unclear what may have changed in the short time since Lindelof made those last remarks. As for Watchmen, though, Lindelof certainly accomplished what he promised in October by delivering a complete story.
