Watchmen led the 72nd Emmy Awards with 26 nominations overall, including Outstanding Limited Series and top awards for actors Regina King and Jeremy Irons.

King was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or a Television Movie, and Irons was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in the same category. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jovan Adepo and Louis Gossett Jr. were nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series, while Jean Smart was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress.

The show also got three nods for directing, three for single-camera editing and two for cinematography. Other Watchmen nominations include title design, original score, original music, sound editing, visual effects, production design, casting and costumes.

HBO's Watchmen is set 34 years after the events in the DC maxiseries, exploring themes of racial injustice and police violence. There are no plans for a second season, though HBO reclassified the show as a limited series to keep the option alive.

The nominations were announced online by Leslie Jones. The 72nd Emmy Awards are scheduled for Sept. 20 on ABC, with Jimmy Kimmel hosting.
