When Jeff Bezos announced he was spending $42 million on the construction of a 10,000 year clock inside a hollowed-out mountain, most people waved it off as another billionaire's flight of fancy. However, Damon Lindelof couldn't help but notice that this bore a striking resemblance to a plot in one of his shows.
The mastermind behind the HBO's Watchmen posted an image of the Popular Mechanics headline that announced Bezos' clock project, and underneath that a picture of Lady Trieu, played by Hong Chau. "Uh-oh," Lindelof wrote in the caption.
Throughout the course of the Watchmen series, Lady Trieu was building a device called the Millennium Clock. In reality, it was a quantum centrifuge meant to extract the powers of Doctor Manhattan and transfer them to Trieu, ostensibly so that she could usher in a true era of world piece. Trieu's father Adrian Veidt, better known as Ozymandis, triggered a rain of frozen squids over the area, killing Trieu and destroying the Clock.
While Bezos likely doesn't intend to give himself godlike powers, one cannot blame Lindelof for making the connection to the events in the Watchmen series and this 10,000 year clock. In any case, it will be an impressive sight once construction is finished.
