Time travel will be a recurring theme on the 2016-2017 television schedule, as ABC, NBC and Fox have ordered series that send their protagonists through history. And let's not forget "DC's Legends of Tomorrow" on The CW and "12 Monkeys" on Syfy.

NBC picked up "Timeless" from Eric Kripke ("Supernatural") and the producers of "The Blacklist," described as an action-adventure series that stars Abigail Spencer ("True Detective," "Rectify"), Matt Lanter ("Star Wars: The Clone Wars") and Malcolm Barrett ("The Hurt Locker") as members of a team recruited to travel back in time to protect the past from a mysterious criminal. ABC, meanwhile, greenlit "Time After Time," the Kevin Williamson drama based on the Karl Alexander novel and 1979 movie. It's a cat-and-mouse adventure through time as legendary science fiction author H.G. Wells is transported to modern-day Manhattan in pursuit of Jack the Ripper. Josh Bowman and Freddie Storma star. And then there's Fox, which takes the comedy route with "Making History" from Julius Sharpe ("Family Guy," "The Cleveland Show"), about three friends who use a time machine to alleviate the boredom of their humdrum lives.
