British Lion Films has released a (NSFW) new trailer for The Wicker Tree, director Robin Hardy's reimagining, of sorts, of his 1973 cult classic The Wicker Man. The studio points out this isn't a sequel or remake, but rather a companion film that explores similar themes. And also features Christopher Lee.
Based on Hardy's 2006 novel Cowboys for Christ, The Wicker Tree centers on Beth and Steve, a gospel singer and her cowboy boyfriend who are both devout members of an evangelical Christian church. Sent from Texas to preach the gospel door to door in Scotland, they initially encounter abuse before being welcomed to Tressock, the border fiefdom of the sinister Lachlan Morrison. The young missionaries assume their hosts simply want to hear more about Jesus, but they quickly discover how wrong they are.
In addition to Lee, the cast includes Graham McTavish, Jacqueline Leonard, Clive Russell, Henry Garrett and Brittania Nicol. The Wicker Tree is set for release sometime this year.
