He may not be Kal-El, but this version of the Man of Steel appears to be every bit as super.

Earlier this week, Bruce Timm's re-imagined DC Universe arrived in the form of Machinima's animated shorts. In the debut "Justice League: Gods and Monsters Chronicles" webisode, Batman tackled his arch-nemesis, the serial killer known as Harley Quinn. Today, it's Superman's turn to shine, as the son of Zod faces a new version of one of Clark Kent's classic foes.

The short also reveals more of this alternate DCU's make up, with Dr. Sivana advising what appears to be President Amanda Waller on the most efficient and effective way to deal with a government-created Brainiac gone out of control.

"Superman's look was, honestly, the toughest [to create]," Timm told CBR News, discussing the character's departure from his traditional look in a recent interview. "The only thing I knew was that I didn't want him to have a big red and yellow diamond on his chest or on his costume. I actually even resisted putting an 'S' on him anywhere. To a degree, I just wanted to get him out of spandex because I didn't want him to have a traditional super hero look. I wanted to do something different with him, but I didn't really know what that meant. I kept stripping him back and stripping him back, to the point where it almost became boring, where he's just wearing a turtleneck and tight pants and jack boots. You have to jazz it up somehow. I thought, 'Oh, I'll put a leather coat on him. This looks cool.' Then I started drawing him in motion and the way his coat would flap in the breeze, I thought, 'Wow, that looks a little like a cape. That's kind of cool.' So it was a weird accident."

The final "Chronicles" short, featuring Wonder Woman, arrives soon. The animated "Justice League: Gods and Monsters" feature film directed by Sam Liu, produced by Timm and Alan Burnett, and starring Benjamin Bratt, Michael C. Hall, and Tamara Taylor, arrives July 28.
