Although we can quibble about the quality of the writing and acting on The Walking Dead -- and we do so regularly in the comments to the weekly recaps -- it's much harder to find difficult with the series' special effects. The walkers are generally pretty flawless, and it's rare that I've found myself picking out unconvincing patchwork of computer-generated imagery and green screen work (the massive explosion of the CDC last season and the survey of the rolling landscape by Hershel and Rick this season being notable exceptions).
But until I watched the Season 2 visual effects featurette below, I had no idea just how extensive, and how impressive, the use of CGI is in the series. Rick's walkie-talkie confessional on the Atlanta rooftop? Green screen. The horde of walkers on the interstate? Added in post-production, along with some of the abandoned cars. The ranks of the undead surrounding the school where Otis meant his end? Bolstered by CGI. The list goes on.
Check out the effects reel below. The Walking Dead airs Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT on AMC.
