The live-action film adaptation of "Max Steel" has been in the works since 2009. Now, its first trailer has finally arrived from Japan. This comes a mere two months before its release date of October 21, which, when coupled with the movie's long stint in Development Hell, may give fans of the property pause.

However, the trailer isn't half-bad, offering kind of a YA fiction take on the Mattel property. Max's armor looks pretty cool, as does his alien sidekick, Steel.

Max Steel debuted in 1999 as an action-figure line before being transformed into an animated series the following year. Mattel stopped promoting the franchise in the United States in the wake of 9/11, although it grew in popularity in Latin America. The reboot adds a sci-fi element to the concept which finds teenager Max McGrath joining together with alien pal Steel to become Max Steel, a hero who can use turbo energy to right wrongs.

Comic writer Christopher Yost ("Thor: The Dark World," "M.O.D.O.K Assassin," various X-books) wrote the script, with Stewart Hendler ("Halo: Forward Unto Dawn") directing, and Ben Winchell in the title role. Ana Villafañe, Andy Garcia, and Maria Bello also star.
