Watch Don Hertzfeldt’s Bizarre ‘Simpsons’ Couch Gag

Viewers who tuned in last night for the Season 26 premiere of The Simpsons to find out which character would die were greeted by one of the show’s strangest couch gags, a surreal journey into the far-flung future courtesy of Oscar-nominated animator/filmmaker Don Hertzfeldt.

We know that, in the year 10,535, The Simpsons will still be on the air, and (chillingly enough) “all animals can scream,” but whatever else was happening in the opening sequence is anybody’s guess.

“It’s his [Hertzfeldt’s] creation and he did some of the voices,” showrunner Al Jean told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s his window that he photographed so all the credit goes to him. It’s a great commentary — and it wasn’t intended this way after the marathon — on the longevity of the show and it comes at a perfect time.”
