A sequel to 2013's Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice premiered on March 25, 2016. The film follows Henry Cavill's Last Son of Krypton and Ben Affleck's Dark Knight as they are manipulated into fighting each other by Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg). However, they eventually unite with Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) to defeat Doomsday.

The movie was a box office success, grossing $873.6 million off a $250-300 million budget. However, it received mediocre reviews from fans and critics, who criticized the film's pace, dark tone, Eisenberg's performance and the short fight scene between the two titular heroes. The Ultimate Edition was released later in 2016 and featured an additional 31 minutes of footage

The lukewarm response to Batman v Superman and its sequel Justice League led Warner Bros. to restructure its plans for the DC Extended Universe. Affleck has left the role of Batman and Cavill's future as Superman remains a mystery. Instead, DC is focusing on characters such as Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Shazam  — who found financial and critical success in their standalone films — as well as new heroes and antiheroes like Black Adam, the New Gods, Static Shock and an updated roster of the Suicide Squad. However, the old guard of the DCEU will take one final breath when Zack Snyder's Justice League hits HBO Max in 2021.

Directed by Zack Snyder and written by Chris Terrio and David S. Goyer, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice stars Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne / Batman, Henry Cavill as Clark Kent / Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Holly Hunter as Senator June Finch and Gal Gadot as Diana Prince / Wonder Woman. The film is available on Digital HD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD.
