COMIC LEGEND:

Due to a screw-up, Wasteland #6 had a cover released without any cover art.

STATUS:

True

Wasteland was a really cool comic book series. It was so unusual that it was actually the subject of a Comic Book Legends Revealed years ago, as a reader couldn't believe that legendary Chicago improvisational comedian Del Close wrote a comic book series.

Before he was a comic book writer, John Ostrander was big in the Chicago theater scene, as well, and he was friends with the late, great Del Close (Close was a teacher who taught many of the world's most famous improvisational comedians) and so he and Close wrote a comic book series together, mixing in real life stories with fantasy and horror stories, all drawn by different regular artists.

Ty Templeton drew one of the best horror stories...

David Lloyd drew one of the most famous real life stories, about Close's friendship with Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard...

Anyhow, the series drew some embarrassing attention when #5 came out and it accidentally was printed with the cover to #6, complete with a #6 on the cover...

DC quickly reprinted the issue with the correct cover...

But obviously the damage had been done.

In the next issue, editor Mike Gold had a great text piece explaining what had happened and what they decided to do for the REAL #6...

They just decided to eschew cover art entirely!

What a wacky situation all around!

Wasteland really was a great series, though.
