In 2018, Vault Comics released Wasted Space #1 by writer Michael Moreci, artist Hayden Sherman, colorist Jason Wordie, letterer Jim Campbell, and designer Tim Daniel. As an indie title, it exceeded all expectations, running for 25 issues and finding an audience who loved this outstanding space adventure. Now, Vault has launched a Kickstarter campaign for Wasted Space: The Cosmic Collection, which collects the entirety of the Wasted Space story in a super-sized, 672-page hardcover omnibus that features all 25 issues.

CBR caught up with Moreci to discuss the Kickstarter campaign and why the decision was made to release Wasted Space as a giant omnibus. The writer explained what the story means to him and the other creatives on the book, as well as the emotional impact of seeing how far it has come.

CBR: First off, congrats on the Kickstarter. It looks fantastic. What inspired the decision to forge ahead with this super-sized omnibus?

Michael Moreci: Well, like any comic that has a complete run, it's great to have it all in one place. I like to have a complete story in my hands rather than have it spread across however many trades, issues, etc. But we also see this as an opportunity to gain a new audience. Wasted Space is an acclaimed series cherished by its readers -- something we're very grateful for. Now, we want to grow that, and we think this volume, and doing it via Kickstarter, is a great way to expand.

When putting together the Kickstarter, how did you decide on the specific reward levels?

That was more an internal thing at Vault. We knew we wanted the rewards to be fun and reasonably priced -- those, I know, were the main goals -- while having some special tiers for our loyal fans looking for something more.

When you look at this omnibus and remember the original plans for the series before it was even published, what are your emotions right now? Do you feel as if it exceeded your expectations?

I'm pretty overcome, to be honest. Wasted Space is an important book for me and Vault. We both took a tremendous creative risk making it, and we saw that risk through for 25 issues. An indie going that long -- and with the same creative team on every single page (and there are 672 pages total!) -- is a rare feat, and I very much recognize that. I'll always say that Wasted Space is one of the best comics I'll ever be part of making, and I did it with some of the best people around. Seeing how far we've come is deeply meaningful to me.

With the Kickstarter in progress, is there a temptation or itch to revisit the Wasted Space world?

There's always that itch, but it would be really, really hard for me to come back. I'm sure there are people who disagree, but I think the series ended perfectly. I wouldn't change a thing, nor do I want to jeopardize a thing -- and going back to the well could do just that. Never say never, but I'd need a stellar idea and a lot of caution in order to return.

For someone who hasn't checked out Wasted Space before, why should they and why will it be their next favorite comic?

Well, I've always said that Wasted Space is the series that comics needs. It's big and bold and wild, it embraces the visual medium to its very fullest, and I don't think many comics do that anymore. I'm just being frank. If you love the medium, I think you'll find something special in Wasted Space. Not only that but, to me, it's just a great story for our time. So, yes, it will most definitely be your new favorite comic!
