Rockstar is undoubtedly one of the most dominating forces in the video game industry today. It's proven itself over and over again by releasing stellar titles like Grand Theft Auto III and Red Dead Redemption. However, the company has a few titles that seemed to be forgotten over time -- and the 2005 video game adaptation of The Warriors may be Rockstar's best forgotten title.

The Warriors is a 1979 cult film that follows a New York City gang framed for murdering an esteemed crime boss. They must fight off rival gangs as they make their way from the northern Bronx to their home turf in Coney Island. Although critics panned the movie upon release, The Warriors built up a loyal following and is now highly respected in the underground film community. It influenced countless movies and even spawned a comic book series.

Although many of the spin-offs are subpar at best, the video game adaptation captures the true essence of the film, while also expanding its lore.

The video game is more of a prequel than a reimagining of the movie. Players get an inside look at each character and everything leading up to the events of the film. It takes fans through the history of the Warriors while demonstrating their rise to power. There are also a few flashbacks missions about the initiation process for several members. Fans of the film will love sinking their teeth in the game's extended story and detailed portrait of the Warriors' legacy.

The game itself plays like a mix between a free-roam action and a classic arcade beat 'em up. Players journey through the rough streets of 1970s New York, expanding the Warriors' territory. Every level consists of a semi-open environment with various tasks scattered around the map.

There is the main objective, as well as a few occasional side missions to give players some extra cash. The Warriors can also break into stores, steal car radios and mug unsuspecting civilians if they need to make a quick buck before completing the main objective.

A handful of Warriors will join players on most missions. They act as the player's defense force during combat and can even help loot small businesses. Cops will occasionally arrest active party members, forcing players to sneak past the law to save their comrades. The command system works surprisingly well and comes in handy during dire situations.

Very few movie tie-in games capture their basis as well as The Warriors. It gives valuable insight into the Warriors' legacy while giving players a fantastic gaming experience. Much like the movie it's based on, the video game adaptation became a cult classic but has been largely forgotten. Regardless, The Warriors is a phenomenal action-adventure beat 'em up that is a must-play for any fans of the classic film.
