WARNING: The following contains spoilers for "Proverbs 14:1" the eighth episode of Warrior Nun, now streaming on Netflix.

As far as protagonists go, Warrior Nun's Ava Silva has had a rough go of it her entire life. After enduring a horrific car accident that robbed her of her mobility and claimed her mother's life, Ava was remanded to an orphanage for years where she was treated cruelly and ultimately murdered by the nun supervising the facility. Even after being resurrected and having her mobility restored by the ancient halo embedded in her back, Ava continues to run into new struggles, including being hunted by a sinister tech corporation and learning that she is the latest in a line of Warrior Sisters tasked with fighting the forces of darkness.

After being forced to step up and slay a demon while losing her new boyfriend J.C., Ava accepted her divine destiny to become the titular Warrior Nun. She received guidance from fellow Warrior Sister Shotgun Mary and befriended other nuns in the secret order, including Sister Beatrice. After the order is usurped by the nefarious Cardinal Duretti and his own loyal squad of Warrior Sisters, Father Vincent leads his nuns to regroup at a separate location. With Ava now in the good graces of tech entrepreneur Jillian Salvius, the exiled nuns shelter at her corporate headquarters in Spain while Ava begins training to use the powers granted to her by the artifact in earnest.

While undergoing an initial round of experiments on the artifact and her powers under Jillian's supervision, Ava learned that whenever she expends too much of the halo's energy, she becomes immobile once again until she recovers her strength. Determined to recover a holy weapon held right in the heart of the Vatican taken over by Duretti, Ava begins rigorously training to phase intangibly through multiple yards of solid concrete to prepare for a heist on her intended target. As the training begins to take a noticeable toll on her, Ava confides her greatest fear to Beatrice.

While Beatrice assumes Ava is most worried about becoming a paraplegic again if she loses her ability to tap into the halo, Ava reveals there's something far more terrifying for her: The possibility of being alone again. For years, Ava was confined and relatively alone in the orphanage, with only the young boy Diego to keep her company in her final days before her initial death.

This denied her the comfort of friendship, resulting in her obvious social awkwardness upon leaving the orphanage. Similarly, the first group of friends and boyfriend she made after returning to life all abandoned her after they learned the truth about her incredible abilities, leaving her all alone if not for her fellow Warrior Sisters.

With the series hitting the ground running, it's easy to forget that Ava was denied a normal childhood and friendship due to her tragic background. Ava's admission to Beatrice brings it all back into perspective that, no matter what incredible powers and abilities she now possesses, Ava is still afraid of being that terrified, lonely girl in that unfriendly orphanage once again. But now, with an entire order of nuns at her side, Ava won't have to face her greatest battles alone as she continues to train for a mission that could save humanity from the forces of Hell.

Based on the comic book series by Ben Dunn, Warrior Nun was developed for television by Simon Barry and stars Alba Baptista and Tristan Ulloa. The series is available to stream now on Netflix.
