Already starring in director Joseph Kosinski’s post-apocalyptic Horizons, Tom Cruise is now reportedly in talks with Warner Bros. to play the lead in the sci-fi war film We Are Mortals, previously known as All You Need Is Kill.
The Hollywood Reporter characterizes the development as part of a career turnaround for Cruise, whose public image and box-office appeal have taken hits in recent years. He now appears poised for a comeback, beginning in December with the release of Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol.
We Are Mortals, an adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s light novel All You Need Is Kill, would find Cruise playing a new recruit in a war between humanity and invading aliens who becomes trapped in a time loop and has to relive the same battle over and over again until he discovers a way to break the cycle.
Warner Bros. seems ready to put the big-budget film on the fast track now that director Doug Liman is free (his on-again, off-again space heist film Luna hit yet another roadblock at Paramount). News surfaced just two weeks ago that the studio was eager to sign Brad Pitt to star. Apparently that didn’t pan out.
