In a move that's causing an uproar across the film industry, Warner Bros. is refusing to share daily box office figures for new release Tenet.

According to sources speaking to Variety, the move was kicked off on Tenet's opening weekend, when media measurement and research company Rentrak, along with rival studios, struggled to obtain box office figures for Tenet. WB only reported box office figures in the form of a weekend haul on Sunday, Sept. 6. Usually, films deliver day-by-day grosses on a daily basis that the general public and other studios, have access to.

Initially presumed to be something done solely for the film's premiere frame, this is now how WB is handling Tenet's release going forward. This procedure is already being imitated by Sony Pictures, which is not reporting daily box office numbers for its new release, The Broken Hearts Gallery.

Neither WB nor Comscore have released an official comment on this matter. Refusing to divulge box office figures has reportedly ignited frustration at rival studios due to how valuable box office data is. Variety's sources at WB argue they are under no obligation to report daily box office figures, particularly during an ongoing pandemic. Meanwhile, other figures outside of WB note that a reason for the lack of Tenet box office reports could be that smaller theaters, especially drive-in locations, do not report their grosses until Sunday.

Additionally, industry analysts have speculated that WB releasing limited amounts of box office data for Tenet is a way for the studio to control the media narrative surrounding its box office performance.

Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Tenet stars John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Kenneth Branaugh, Dimple Kapadia, Martin Donovan, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Himesh Patel, Clémence Poésy, Denzil Smith and Michael Caine. The film is now playing in theaters in select cities.
