As the follow-up to 2014's The LEGO Movie, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part had a lot of expectation riding on it at the box office. However, it has performed well below initial studio estimates.

In a new interview, Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara reflected on the surprisingly disappointing box office performance of the animated sequel, uncertain why the critically acclaimed sequel to the crowd-pleasing first film hasn't connected with audiences like its predecessor.

"It didn’t do as well as tracking would’ve suggested, which was a little puzzling," Tsujihara admitted in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. "The first movie was so fresh and so different. We need to continually rethink the experience, but the LEGO brand is incredibly strong."

Despite the disappointing box office returns for The LEGO Movie 2, Tsujihara observed that the brand has been performing well with the studio's video game titles for years. "On the game side, it’s been an incredible franchise," Tsujihara said. "We acquired [LEGO video game developer] TT Games 12 years ago, and it really was a cornerstone of everything we’ve done in games."

Directed by Mike Mitchell, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part reunites Chris Pratt as Emmet, Elizabeth Banks as Lucy (aka Wyldstyle), Will Arnett as Batman, Nick Offerman as Metal Beard and Alison Brie as Unikitty. They're joined by Tiffany Haddish as Queen Watevra Wa-Nab, Stephanie Beatriz as Sweet Mayhem and Arturo Castro as Ice Cream Cone. The film is now in theaters nationwide.
