Warner Bros. is reportedly considering Man of Steel star Henry Cavill's potential return as Superman to the DC Extended Universe.

In a conversation on Twitter Spaces between insiders Erik Davis of Fandango and Umberto Gonzalez from The Wrap, the two provided an update regarding Cavill's future in the DCEU. "The Multiverse has to stay, if they want to keep [Supergirl actress] Sasha Calle and bring back a new Superman or bring back Cavill or something, that's going to have to be the reality of it," Gonzalez said. Davis replied saying he had "heard a story that they've asked [Cavill], and he doesn't want to do it, he doesn't want to come back." Gonzalez, however, stated that the people at Warner Bros. Discovery "like [Cavill] as Superman."

"This is probably going to turn into a story, I'm not sure, but I'm pretty sure they'll maybe try to [get him back]...," said Gonzalez. "I could be wrong, I just don't think they've had a take yet for him to come back. But again, that's all subject to whoever the new DC guy is overseeing the universe and this committee and the one answering to [Warner Bros. Discovery President and CEO] David Zaslav. It's been almost ten years since we've seen him in Man of Steel. But what I can say, I personally, I don't think it's over just yet."

Cavill has portrayed the Man of Steel in the DCEU since 2013's Man of Steel, and again in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016, Justice League in 2017 and Zack Snyder's Justice League in 2021. The actor has been open about his desire to return to the DCEU, stating in a December 2021 interview that he still has his Superman suit and is "ready and waiting for the phone calls." In November 2021, Cavill claimed that he wasn't done with the Last Son of Krypton, believing that there was still "a lot more storytelling for [him] to do" as Superman.

While there have been rumors circulating that Warner Bros. is considering a follow-up to Cavill's Man of Steel, they remain largely unconfirmed. Other recent rumors suggested the script for Ta-Nehisi Coates and J.J. Abrams' upcoming Superman film could leave the door open for Cavill's return.

Prior to Warner Bros.'s panel at San Diego Comic-Con in July, there were reports that The Witcher star would make a surprise appearance to promote future Superman projects. Much to the disappointment of some fans, the panel instead consisted of previews for upcoming DCEU films Black Adam and Shazam: Fury of the Gods, as well as appearances from their respective stars, Dwayne Johnson and Zachary Levi. During the panel, however, Johnson fueled fan hopes that Cavill might return in the future.

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, Black Adam arrives in theaters on Oct. 21, 2022. Shazam! Fury of the Gods hits theaters Dec. 21.
