Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures released a new trailer for the long-awaited Dune remake.

The trailer introduces the planet of Arrakis, which is home to precious spice. However, that spice draws outsiders who'll do anything to obtain it, including killing the world's denizens. House Atreides then embarks on a missing to bring peace to the desert planet, which puts young Paul Atreides in direct contact with a woman from his dreams named Chani.

Originally slated for a purely theatrical release, Dune became one of the many Warner Bros. films to receive a day-and-date theatrical/HBO Max bow. However, this decision was met with arguably more controversy than other 2021 Warner Bros. films, largely because it's a Legendary production. There were even reports at one point that Legendary was considering filing a lawsuit against Warner Bros.

"With this decision AT&T has hijacked one of the most respectable and important studios in film history," Dune director Denis Villeneuve said in December 2020, commenting not only on the fate of his film but the full 2021 Warner Bros. slate. "With HBO Max’s launch a failure thus far, AT&T decided to sacrifice Warner Bros.’ entire 2021 slate in a desperate attempt to grab the audience’s attention."

Dune is based on Frank Herbert's acclaimed 1965 sci-fi novel of the same name. The book was previously adapted for the big screen in 1984, with David Lynch's Dune hitting theaters in December of that year. It received another live-action adaptation in 2000, with a three-part miniseries titled Frank Herbert's Dune airing on the Sci Fi Channel. A sequel miniseries, Frank Herbert's Children of Dune, followed in 2003.

As for the latest live-action adaptation of Dune, the project touts a star-studded cast that includes Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Zendaya as Chani, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto Atreides, Stellan Skarsgård as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, Dave Bautista as Glossu Rabban, David Dastmalchian as Piter De Vries and Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho. In April, it was also reported that the sequel is already in early development.

"I [wrote] a treatment to show the estate what we could do with the second half," Dune screenwriter Eric Roth said. "But I've got to tell you that I think I've done as much as I can do. I also have other things I want to do. I'm 76 years old, and these things obviously take a long time to do. And so I have a few others I'm excited about."

Dune arrives in theaters and on HBO Max Oct. 22.
