The head of Warner Bros. has maintained that the studio is pleased with the box office haul for Tenet.

"We’re very pleased with the results of Tenet," Warner Bros. CEO Ann Sarnoff said. "A couple of things: we knew it would over index in the international markets. Christopher Nolan has a huge, following, of course in the U.S., but his other movies have typically over indexed in international markets. If you remember back in June, July, August, the international markets were more open. We had this amazing movie, I don’t know if you’ve seen it, that really deserved to be seen on the big screen."

Sarnoff's stance appears to be a more optimistic version of recent comments made by AT&T CEO John Stankey. "I can’t tell you that we walked away from the Tenet experience saying it was a home run," Stankey said during a recent investor's call. He did, however, maintain that he was happy the film was released theatrically.

After numerous delays, Tenet was domestically released in theaters on Sept. 3. The first big blockbuster to be released since movie theaters closed due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Tenet has grossed $50.6 million domestically. It has fared better overseas, where it has amassed $283.4 million.

Armed with only one word—Tenet—and fighting for the survival of the entire world, the Protagonist journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real time. Not time travel. Inversion.

Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Tenet stars John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Kenneth Branagh, Dimple Kapadia, Martin Donovan, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Himesh Patel, Clémence Poésy, Denzil Smith and Michael Caine. The film is now playing in theaters overseas and in select U.S. cities.
