Warner Bros. Eyes Channing Tatum as Its Man from U.N.C.L.E.

Steven Sorderbergh’s big-screen take on The Man from U.N.C.L.E. can’t seem to catch a break. First, planned star George Clooney had to bow out because of a scheduled surgery. Then, it turned out that Matt Damon, Johnny Depp and Bradley Cooper all passed on the lead role. Well, according to Deadline, Channing Tatum might be filling the spot.

Tatum is starring in Sorderbergh’s in-production Magic Mike, where he stars as a veteran stripper trying to teach the ropes to an up-and-comer played by Alex Pettyfer. While the pair presumably have a good working relationship, that’s a noticeable drop in name recognition.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. is based on the NBC spy series that ran from 1964-1968 and starred Robert Vaughn and David McCallum. Tatum, who has experience playing military characters in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and Stop-Loss, is no stranger to action flicks, but we’ll see if he’s interested and how things proceed from there.

All of this raises a lot of questions. Is something wrong with the script, or have all the big names just had other projects they want to work on? Does this seeming lack of interest and a huge headlining name put the project in danger? We’ll see how it all shakes out.
