Warner Brothers chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara emphasized the studio’s commitment to DC Comics properties and other “big franchises” in a recent Q&A at the Credit Suisse Technology, Media & Telecom Conference. He also hinted at a future direct-to-consumer product based around DC Comics.
“If you look at what’s happening with the quality of the television product, the movies that are breaking through are the big franchises,” he said. He stated that these franchises are “becoming more and more important” as they take up bigger and bigger percentages of the overall global box office. DC Comics’ intellectual property is therefore an important part of Warner Brothers’ overall strategy.
Tsujihara also spoke about the potential for direct-to-consumer products based on big IP like DC Comics and “Harry Potter,” citing “hundreds of millions of dollars in opportunity” that exist there. “We’ve been working on that quite feverishly over the last 12 months,” he said, “It requires a level of excellence in the creative piece of it all … but that’s what we are executing on and I feel very comfortable with where we are going.”
2017 is already shaping up to be a big year for Warner Brothers’ DC film universe. “Wonder Woman,” directed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot and Chris Pine, is due in theaters on June 2, 2017. “Justice League,” directed by Zack Snyder and starring Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller and Jason Momoa, follows shortly after on November 17, 2017.
