Warner Bros. announced an upcoming animated adaptation of the classic DC Elseworlds story Superman: Red Son at Comic-Con International in San Diego.

The announcement was made by publicist Gary Miereanu during the world premiere of Warner Bros.' latest adaptation: Batman: Hush. Miereanu stated the feature was being planned for a release in the spring of 2020. There was no mention of who specifically would be involved in the making of the film.

In addition to Superman: Red Son, Miereanu also announced two other adaptations planned for next year: Justice League Dark: Apokolips War -- a sequel to 2017's Justice League Dark, based on the comic of the same name, is scheduled for later in the spring. Superman: Man of Tomorrow -- an original story, scheduled for release next summer.

Superman: Red Son was 2003 mini-series by Mark Millar, Dave Johnson and Kilian Plunkett. The story's premise explored an alternate reality where baby Kal-El's rocket ship landed in the Soviet Union, rather than the United States, with Superman ultimately becoming a symbol for Soviet values such as communism and expansionism. The Eisner-nominated series has long been a favorite alternate-reality tale, and in recent years has been featured in DC's restructured multiverse.
