War For the Planet of the Apes Teaser Features Voice From the Past

War for the Planet of the Apes is gearing up for the May 16 release of its final trailer with the debut of a teaser, featuring the voice of none other than franchise veteran Charlton Heston.

Heston, as Planet of the Apes superfans know, starred in the first-ever film in 1968 (and, briefly, in its sequel) as Taylor, the astronaut who traveled forward in time towards humanity's bleak future. In the teaser, Heston states that he refuses to accept man's demise because of man's ingenuity and strong-willed spirit. The quote comes from Heston's 1995 autobiography In The Arena.

"I refuse to accept the end of man. I believe he will endure. He will prevail," he says in the voiceover. "Not because alone among God's creatures he has a voice--because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and endurance."

Instead, the teaser contradicts Heston's words, showing man's historical rise, featuring images of humanity going from farming to the industrial age, and man's fall at the hands of apes, with scenes from Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. The last scene is a closeup on Caesar (Andy Serkis) in probably the most realistic rendering we've seen yet.

War for the Planet of the Apes is the continuation of the reboot of the Planet of the Apes series. The film, also starring Woody Harrelson, will be in theaters July 14.
