WandaVision's conclusion finally answered many burning questions and raised even more. The series also taught viewers some critical lessons on expectations and demonstrated how, sometimes, the most impactful moments are the most subtle. In fact, WandaVision reveals one of the most vital plot points in the MCU: Tony Stark's reasoning behind his staunch support and signing the Sokovia Accords. Sadly, it came at the cost of dozens of innocents being painfully stripped of their free will by Wanda Maximoff's chaos magic.

In Season 1, Episode 9, "The Series Finale," Wanda is confronted by the townspeople that she had mind-controlled in her hex. At first, their gazes are filled with fear and desperation. Being unable to handle the weight of her guilt, Wanda accidentally began to choke them with her abilities. It was one of the deadliest losses of control that she has had thus far. Unfortunately, her inability to keep her powers in check dates back to her time as an Avenger in Captain America: Civil War.

What Are The Sokovia Accords?

The Sokovia Accords came to be following the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron. The namesake for this set of international laws is Sokovia, the nation where Wanda and her brother, Pietro Maximoff, were born. They were drafted in the aftermath of Age of Ultron because Tony Stark created the rogue AI Ultron. While Tony hoped to protect the world from future threats with his invention, he inadvertently endangered billions of lives.

In the film, Ultron sends Sokovia's capital city, Novi Grad, into the sky to thrust it back to Earth and create an extinction-level cataclysm. The Avengers secured a victory that saved the world, but not without numerous casualties.

The Accords contained a series of government sanctions on superpowered individuals, limiting their ability to act freely with their powers. These laws applied to every active member of the Avengers at the time of its ratification. Those who signed it would be allowed to continue operating as superheroes but would report to the government for approval before setting out to save innocents worldwide. This level of regulatory oversight was designed to prevent another disaster like the Ultron Offensive.

What Enacted The Accords?

While the Accords were drafted after Age of Ultron, they weren't ratified until Civil War, after Wanda tried to save Captain America from Crossbones's suicide bombing in Lagos. She successfully saved Captain America, but the bomb exploded near civilians and killed dozens, including aid workers from Wakanda. Wanda's actions in Nigeria were also the perfect catalyst for the United Nations to restrain the Avengers legally.

The Sokovia Accords remained in effect until Thanos wiped out half of all life in the universe during Avengers: Infinity War. It is unclear if the Accords remained in place or if they were removed due to a severe lack of heroes. With their return after Thanos's defeat and Wanda's Hex anomaly, the United Nations has a strong case in favor of reinstating the Accords.

Would The Accords Have Stopped Wanda?

WandaVision shed new light on the extent of Wanda's immense magical abilities. Since becoming the Scarlet Witch, she has become one of the most powerful Avengers yet. The show also introduced the government organization S.W.O.R.D., which attempted to contain Wanda and her powers. Every attempt to detain her was unsuccessful, with the most promising results coming from their most recent creation, a reassembled white Vision who only lacked the spirit granted to him by the Mind Stone. Unfortunately, instead of stopping Wanda, S.W.O.R.D. proved that she is nigh-unstoppable.

If the Sokovia Accords were still in effect, the situation could have been completely different. Had Tony Stark gotten his way, there would be infrastructure in place for Wanda to get the help she needed for her immeasurable trauma and grief. The Accords would likely have had mental healthcare provisions for enhanced individuals working for government agencies. Her powers would have also had a safe place to grow, and she could have gradually learned to control them before becoming the Scarlet Witch. Wanda chose to console herself with powers she does not fully understand in the absence of such provisions, resulting in the Hex. Incorporating elements like her favorite TV shows and a recreation of the love of her life, Vision, brought her bittersweet comfort at the expense of the health and well-being of numerous innocents.

The Sokovia Accords weren't implemented at the best time in the MCU. Still, Tony Stark was right to think that they were necessary to keep the Avengers together and safe while protecting civilians from powers left entirely unchecked. While the Scarlet Witch's future is uncertain, she is likely to become a villain, which could have been prevented. Under the Accords, she could have undergone a fair trial, explained her situation, and faced the appropriate consequences for her actions in Westview. For now, the MCU is changing yet again, and civilians are landing in the crossfire more than ever before. Time will heal Wanda's wounds, but the Accords could have helped her sooner.
