WARNING: The following contains spoilers for WandaVision Episodes 1 & 2, now streaming on Disney+.

WandaVision has thrown viewers head-first into a mysterious world where Wanda Maximoff and Vision are a married couple living in the suburbs and trying to keep their super-powers a secret from their prying neighbors. The series will ultimately dovetail into the events of the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, though for now it's unclear how that will happen. That said, an intriguing fan theory speculates it's all to do with Doctor Strange secretly guiding Wanda through the five stages of grief following Vision's death in Avengers: Infinity War.

Posted to the Fan Theories subreddit, the theory suggests Wanda is really unconscious during WandaVision and has created the show's warped reality to avoid dealing with the fact Vision is gone. The problem is her powers are also impacting the real-world and tearing the very fabric of the multiverse, creating open pathways between the Marvel Cinematic Universe's prime reality and other universes. Hoping to break her out of this state, Doctor Strange is quietly leading Wanda through the five stages of grief, with WandaVision's first two episodes set in the denial stage.

The idea Strange is trying to break through to Wanda would provide a plausible explanation for the weirder events on WandaVision so far, like the scene where Vision's boss, Mr. Hart, begins choking or the shift from a black-and-white sitcom world to a multicolored one at the end of Episode 2. It would also explain why Wanda seems so troubled during these moments, particularly when she finds a detail -- like a yellow and red toy helicopter when the setting is black-and-white -- that's clearly out of place. Indeed, if these are Strange's way of shaking her out of her state, Wanda's traumatized subconscious would be inclined to reject them.

However, although the Reddit theory also speculates Strange sometimes enters Wanda's world and poses as Vision, that idea seems unlikely. For one, WandaVision's version of Vision is portrayed as having a sense of agency when he's not around Wanda and even questions his reality at times, like when he asks a co-worker what their company actually makes. Vision is similarly portrayed as being sexually attracted to Wanda, which makes the idea of him secretly being Strange problematic at best. Of course, that doesn't rule out the possibility this take on Vision only exists in Wanda's mind.

Finally, the theory argues there are evil beings working against Strange to get Wanda to destroy reality, including Mephisto and the mysterious beekeeper seen in Episode 2. As it were, WandaVision has teased Mephisto on more than one occasion already, so there may be something to that theory. By comparison, the beekeeper is speculated to be the villain Swarm but also appears to have a SWORD logo on their suit. If so, they may really be working with Strange and/or SWORD's Monica Rambeau -- who's seemingly under-cover in the WandaVision world as "Geraldine" -- to help Wanda before it's too late.

Building on that, it's possible Strange isn't involved in what's happening on WandaVision at all. Besides Monica showing up, a voice that sounded a lot like FBI agent Jimmy Woo's could be heard asking "Who's doing this to you, Wanda?" on the radio twice in Episode 2. This could mean he and Monica are working with SWORD to try and figure out who's pushing Wanda to remain within her newly-created reality, be it Mephisto and/or Agatha Harkness disguised as Wanda's neighbor Agnes. In the end, though, it might fall to Wanda to figure out this mystery on her own and stop the larger multiverse from being torn asunder.

Whatever the case may be, it's looking more and more likely the MCU's multiverse will be noticeably damaged by the time WandaVision draws to a close -- meaning, if Stephen Strange isn't already actively involved with the situation, he will by the time Multiverse of Madness picks up.

Written by Jac Schaeffer and directed by Matt Shakman, WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as Vision, Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Kathryn Hahn as Agnes. New episodes air Fridays on Disney+.
