WARNING: The following contains spoilers for WandaVision Episode 8, "Previously On," streaming now on Disney+.

Part of what makes WandaVision's sitcom reality so fascinating is the way it remixes Wanda's past to create a world that functions as, in essence, a funhouse mirror version of her life. Whether it's trauma from her childhood manifesting itself in strange and often dark TV commercials or the way the WandaVision reality shifts through different eras to emulate the sitcoms Wanda grew up watching, things are rarely what they seem on the surface in the show's setting. As it turns out, even something as innocuous as a comical blunder can have a hidden meaning for Wanda.

In the first episode of WandaVision, "Filmed Before a Live Studio Audience," Vision's boss Mr. Hart and his wife come over for a dinner that Wanda doesn't know about. This leads to an amusing situation where Wanda, who's dressed for a romantic evening alone with her husband, shocks her guests by showing up in a scandalous outfit and playfully sneaking up behind Mr. Hart and covering his eyes, believing him to be Vision. Doing their best to cover things up, Wanda and Vision tell the Harts this was just "the traditional Sokovian greeting of hospitality."

Initially, this seemed like little more than a tribute to The Dick Van Dyke Show and the way it worked around the broadcasting restrictions of the 1960s to incorporate more risqué jokes. However, as illustrated in the above tweet, the latest episode of WandaVision, "Previously On," saw Wanda's mom greet her in a similar way during a flashback to Wanda's childhood in Sokovia. After establishing that Wanda and her family would watch sitcoms together for both entertainment and to improve their English, the scene went on to take a dark turn, revealing this was the night Wanda's parents were killed after their apartment building was bombed by a pair of Stark Industry weapons.

Although this incident was previously mentioned in Avengers: Age of Ultron, it's a far more intense moment when experienced from Wanda's point of view. What's more, this goes to show her miscalculated attempt to tease Vision in Episode 1 wasn't just some random act; it was a loving gesture she picked up from her parents. Suffice it to say, in light of this revelation, the gag takes on a much sadder meaning.

As a whole, "Previously On" answered a lot of questions viewers have been asking since WandaVision began, including how the sitcom reality came to be and why Wanda decided to take up residence in Westview, NJ in the first place. Much like the story behind Wanda's so-called "traditional Sokovian greeting," the answers were pretty heartbreaking and served to demonstrate the sheer amount of emotional pain and grief Wanda has been wrestling with throughout the series. It just goes to show: in a world where everything is built out of pieces of Wanda's memories and emotions, there's a good chance even the sillier aspects of the WandaVision reality are rooted in something that has much more meaning in the real world.

Written by Jac Schaeffer and directed by Matt Shakman, WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as Vision, Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Kathryn Hahn as Agnes. New episodes air Fridays on Disney+.
