WARNING: The following contains spoilers for WandaVision Episode 8, "Previously On," streaming now on Disney+.

Ever since WandaVision premiered, the Marvel Cinematic Universe series has inspired plenty of fan theories regarding the true identity of the show's antagonist and its implications for the rest of the MCU. And while Wanda Maximoff and Vision's nosy neighbor Agnes has revealed herself to be the evil witch Agatha Harkness, heightening rumors that Mephisto is the big bad pulling the strings from the shadows, recent developments surrounding Vision suggests a very different arch-nemesis may be set up for his grand introduction into the MCU: Immortus, better known by his other name...Kang the Conqueror.

The government agency S.W.O.R.D. was revealed to have recovered Vision's body sometime after his death at the hands of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. While S.W.O.R.D. acting director Tyler Hayward claimed Wanda had stolen the body to resurrect him as her husband in her twisted, television suburbia, the series penultimate episode's mid-credits scene featured the bombshell revelation that S.W.O.R.D. still had possession of the synthetic Avenger's remains. More shockingly, S.W.O.R.D. had reconstructed Vision from the salvaged parts, though the catastrophic damage to his synthetic skin made him appear stark white as he reactivated.

Vision in the WandaVision Episode 8 Mid-Credits Scene

The comic book origins of the colorless Vision are shown in the 1989 storyline "Vision Quest" by John Byrne running through the pages of West Coast Avengers #42-44. Immortus revealed he was secretly manipulating the Scarlet Witch and Vision for years, after first officiating their wedding in 1974's Giant-Sized Avengers #4 by Steve Englehart and Don Heck, to have Wanda make him the master of time. Immortus took control of a group of government operatives to dismantle Vision and rebuild him, resulting in his colorless, emotionless form that existed in the comics for years.

Reports of Kang the Conqueror poised to play a major role in the future of the MCU have been active for months but largely fell to the sideline as WandaVision and Marvel Studios' subsequent Disney+ programming have begun to roll out. Kang was reported to be the intended antagonist for Loki, the upcoming series and its expected premise of the God of Mischief hopping between timelines after the events of Avengers: Endgame making his inclusion logical. Later reports indicated Kang would actually make his grand entrance in next year's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, with Jonathan Majors reportedly cast in the role.

While Mephisto may still be involved in the larger machinations of WandaVision, potentially as the source of Agatha's dark magic, the Disney+ series may be introducing Kang the Conqueror to the MCU even sooner than reported. There's nothing explicitly in the show that suggests Agatha and Hayward are working together, with Hayward's setup as being more than he appears potentially a red herring to reveal he is working for Kang. And if Kang is angling to destroy Wanda while Agatha and whatever dark master she may be serving seek to obtain Wanda's growing magical powers for themselves, Phase 4 of the MCU may be defined by a war between Mephisto and Kang the Conqueror. And a potential war between the master of time and the literal devil may be just the thing that brings the Avengers together on the big screen once again.

Written by Jac Schaeffer and directed by Matt Shakman, WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as Vision, Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness.
