Throughout her time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Scarlet Witch, aka Wanda Maximoff, has retained her Eastern European accent. In recent outings, however, it seemed to diminish significantly. And now, in the new Disney+ series, WandaVision, it can't be heard at all, even though in the first episode, Vision blames Wanda's odd behavior on her Sokovian background. Is this simply a product of Wanda being trapped in American sitcoms in a suburban American town or is there something more going on?

Wanda still had her accent in Captain America: Civil War, but a few years later in Avengers: Infinity War, her accent was significantly reduced. At the time, Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo gave an explanation for why Wanda's accent could only be slightly heard.

"We have intentionally tried to strip that accent away for a couple of reasons... one of the most distinguishing characteristics that [Wanda] has is her accent," Joe Russo said. "So if you’re gonna try to disguise yourself or hide yourself or not be caught, you’re going to try to limit those trigger warnings that would make it easy for someone to identify you, which would be inclusive of her accent... For us, it was very intentional that we would just keep stripping that accent down to show her acclimating and hiding."

Since she's on the run in the film, it certainly makes sense for her to try to lose her accent. Besides, Black Widow, who also hails from Eastern Europe, speaks with an American accent and, in the beginning of Civil War, she gives Wanda advice on how to blend in. So, given Black Widow's spy background, it is not far fetched to believe she may have trained Wanda to lose her accent. And given Wanda had a couple of years in hiding to practice, there's a high chance she may have permanently adapted to speaking differently.

However, in WandaVision, her accent is completely gone. Since Wanda is living in a world based on old-school American sitcoms, it would make sense for her to speak like those characters. In fact, she might be consciously adopting an American accent in an attempt to blend into the suburban setting, just like she and Vision are actively hiding their unusual abilities.

Wanda also might be creating the world of the show based on her knowledge of American sitcoms. Growing up in Sokovia, it is possible that she had access to sitcoms as a child and thus built her ideal image of life with Vision around that. As part of this, she may have made the decision to get rid of her accent using her reality-warping abilities so she can live the perfect suburban sitcom life she envisions.

As the episodes of WandaVision progress, we might learn more about how Wanda's sitcom world works and get a better idea of just what happened to her accent. For now, though, it seems she learned to suppress most of it while on the run and has now learned to use an American accent to blend in with the rest of the show's suburban characters.

Written by Jac Schaeffer and directed by Matt Shakman, WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as Vision, Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Kathryn Hahn as Agnes. New episodes air Fridays on Disney+.
