With the show experiencing great popularity since its debut, fans have taken to looking up facts about Scarlet Witch and get a feel of what her characterization is in the comics. This has led to many questions they’re looking to get answered about the character, so it’s worth checking these answers out.

10 Who Created The Character?

Scarlet Witch alters reality

Casual fans generally assume that every Marvel character was created by Stan Lee. While that’s certainly not true, you would be right to assume Stan Lee was responsible in the case of Scarlet Witch, as he is indeed the one to come up with the character.

However, he wasn’t the only one to credit here, as Jack Kirby is the co-creator of Scarlet Witch. It’s Kirby who designed her appearance, meaning the image fans associate the character with is all thanks to Kirby’s work.

9 When Did She Make Her Debut?

Scarlet Witch has only become mainstream popular in the last decade or so, yet the character actually debuted way back in March 1964. Her first appearance was in X-Men #4, where she arrived alongside her brother Quicksilver as one of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.

The MCU ended up taking inspiration from her debut, as Scarlet Witch’s appearance as a villain first happened in the comics, where she and Quicksilver were forced into the faction that operates under Magneto’s extremist beliefs.

8 Which Teams Has She Been A Part Of?

Nowadays, Scarlet Witch’s name regularly comes up in line-ups of the Avengers. In the comics, her storylines mostly surround the X-Men, which, ironically, she hasn’t actually joined in the long history of her appearances alongside the faction.

Still, she’s hardly devoid of superhero groups, as Scarlet Witch has been part of a bunch of factions, including the Defenders, Uncanny Avengers, West Coast Avengers, Lady Liberators, Seven Brides of Set, Brotherhood of Mutants, Force Works, and HYDRA’s Avengers. Clearly, she hasn’t had to look very far before she’s recruited into a new team.

7 Who Are In Her Family?

Wanda’s parentage has been retconned many times, with the original story being that she and Quicksilver were the children of Magneto and his wife Magda. This was later changed to show that they were experiments by the High Evolutionary and only made to believe they were Magneto’s children, with Polaris as their half-sister.

As for her own children, she and Vision had twin boys through magic. However, since they were created from Mephisto’s soul, the latter reabsorbed the children. Later on, the superheroes Wiccan and Speed come to realize they are the reincarnation of Scarlet Witch’s twins and reunite with their parents.

6 What Is Her Physiology?

Scarlet Witch in House of M

The long-running established physiology of Scarlet Witch was that she was a mutant, as the child of Magneto. To this end, her powers were attributed to being a mutation in her genes, denying her from being an actual sorceress.

However, this was retconned into Scarlet Witch not being mutant either. Instead, she was revealed to be a human all along who got her powers due to experiments carried on her by the High Evolutionary. In the Dawn of X continuity, she is dubbed as “The Great Pretender” after other mutants learn she’s a human and not one of them.

5 What Are Her Most Notable Powers?

Like many aspects about her, Scarlet Witch’s powers have also been retconned plenty of times. Originally, her powers were simply hex magic, in that she could launch blasts or turn her enemies’ powers on themselves. This was later magnified significantly to make Scarlet Witch much more powerful.

In the House of M arc, she was made to be a witch who could warp reality itself, in a story that saw her change the whole universe. By the events of the A vs. X storyline, she was also shown to be resistant to the Phoenix Force.

4 Who Are Her Love Interests?

Her most well-known romance with the Vision makes the duo one of the most powerful couples in the comics. While this pairing has been her most noteworthy one, Scarlet Witch has also been involved with or been the object of affection for other characters.

In The Avengers # 109, Hawkeye is shown to be in love with her after he finds out about her feelings for Vision, and Wonder Man has an attraction toward her as well. In New X-Men Vol 2 #44, she was in a romance with Angel, while The Children's Crusade arc, where she’d lost her memories, showed her as the fiance of Victor von Doom.

3 What Is The Difference Between Comic Book And MCU Scarlet Witch?

There are several similarities the MCU did bring forward from the comics, while some others were left out. The comic book Scarlet Witch is from Transia compared to the MCU one being from Sokovia. Another major difference between the two is in their powers.

The MCU Scarlet Witch isn’t a mutant by any means, instead gaining her powers exclusively from the Mind Stone. Her powers aren’t that of a sorceress as she makes use of psionic energy, while the comic book version is closer in terms of magic.

2 How Old Is She?

The answer to this question is in the ambiguity itself, as the comic book Scarlet Witch’s age hasn’t been established. While she’s old enough to marry and be a mother, there hasn’t been a confirmed date of birth or age that’s been revealed.

It’s a little clearer where the MCU Scarlet Witch is concerned, as she was shown to be a teenager during Captain America: Civil War. Since Avengers: Infinity War skipped ahead a couple of years, Scarlet Witch is around 20-21 by the events of that film.

1 Has She Headlined Her Own Comic Books?

With such a long history, it might seem a given that Scarlet Witch has had her own series. However, that’s not really the case, as she’s been used mainly in team-up stories. She did get her own solo series in 1994, which only lasted four issues, and her 2016 comic book run was also short-lived.

These have been divided into three volumes containing five issues each. They’re best read before watching WandaVision due to a good chunk of backstory found in them. The volumes are titled Witches’ Road, World of Witchcraft, and The Final Hex.
